Will Stein beats out Georgia, Clemson for a contested 4-star linebacker commitment

Kentucky Football received a rare bit of bad news (at least in the context of the Will Stein era) earlier this week when four-star wide receiver Iveon Lewis flipped his commitment from the Wildcats to the Gamecocks in South Carolina. Stein's still-solid 2027-28 class suffered as a result, and fairly so.

But if anyone was fooled into thinking Stein had finally let off the gas, they were sorely mistaken. The Cats first-year head coach turned around and made up that loss with no wasted time left in the rearview mirror. Four-star linebacker Sean Fox has committed to Kentucky, per Hayes Fawcett on X.

This shouldn't simply ease the minds of a fanbase used to seeing the football team fall behind in every facet, but it should serve as a reminder that things are still climbing at Kroger Field.

Stein didn't win any old recruiting battle here. Both Georgia and Clemson were in heavy pursuit of Fox all the way up until his blue and white pledge. Kentucky Football just beat out two of the biggest powerhouses in the sport for a priority recruit.

Say that to yourself, then say it again. Kentucky Football is back. Say that too, only a little louder for our SEC rivals to hear it loud and clear.

The Return of Kentucky Football

Fox, as much if not more than any other recent commitment, signals Kentucky's full resurgence. The physically imposing 6-foot-5 defender out of Warren Central is described by 247Sports' Andrew Ivins as a "Tall and long linebacker that could be molded into a variety of different things."

He's "Effective on the delayed blitz and had displayed the ability to bend on the edge" and "Will strike ball carries if he gets a chance." His 91 rating from 247 places him as a top 10 linebacker in his class and, thus far, slots him in next to offensive lineman Dominic Black as Kentucky's second highest rated recruit in the 2027-28 pool.

94-rated quarterback Jake Nawrot predictably leads that class. From here on out, Kentucky's already unusually lofty recruiting rankings should only continue to rise.

Being Wary of a Familiar Flip

Now, if the aforementioned Lewis has taught us anything, it's that we should be wary of any commitment until the given player fully signs and seals his intent. Yet, it's a good sign to get a pledge as big as this one, and Stein has a solid track record of keeping the guys he lands up to now.

Through that lens, we can celebrate this as a "Stein strikes back", redemptive win for the Wildcats on the recruiting trail. Football is about to be fun for years to come at Kroger Field, and studs like Sean Fox disrupting opposing offenses will be a big reason why.
