Will Stein and Kentucky are facing the brutal reality of flip season in college football

In spite of a strong offseason, it's not all sunshine and rainbows on the recruiting trail for Will Stein and Kentucky.

College recruiting is essentially a wasteland right now with NIL rulings and massive contracts running wild. On the football front, especially, things have gotten well out of control; players are flipping multiple times within a single day, and commitments mean very little without a signature.

Will Stein and Kentucky, in spite of an incredible offseason up to this point, just learned that lesson the hard way. Per Rivals, four-star wide receiver Iveon Lewis has officially flipped his allegiance from Kentucky to South Carolina. A Wildcat-turned-Gamecock. That's a bummer.

Stein and his staff won what was an originally hot recruitment, beating out South Carolina among other major opponents, such as Arkansas and Cincinnati, to land the pass-catcher.

It simply isn't over anymore until it's officially (officially, officially) over. This is a tough loss no matter how you cut it; Stein's 2027 Kentucky class is bound to take a hit as a result.

Looking on the Bright Side

Still, it isn't all bad in Lexington, even if losing Lewis stings. After this fallout, the Wildcats still hold the No. 23 class in the nation according to 247Sports, forecasting a potentially ranked roster that has plenty of firepower to make a splash in the SEC regardless.

Led by four-star quarterback Jake Nawrot, Lewis was a strong complimentary piece on offense that, while valued, may be ultimately replacable. Besides, it's been a blast to follow Stein's successes in his first run on the recruiting trail for Kentucky, but you can't win them all.

Unless, of course, you manage to haul in another four-star receiver to replace the guy you just lost. In that case, I'd consider adding another notch in the "W" column.

Coach Stein may have that part planned out already.

Kentucky's Potential Pivot

As a part of a 14-player visit to Lexington this past weekend, four-star wideout Tyler Fryman (also in the 2027 class) announced that he's de-committing from Louisville on X. The multi-sport athlete, who had initially pledged to the Cardinals for baseball, came to Kroger Field with 13 guys who had already committed to Kentucky, the aforementioned Nawrot included.

Oh, and he changed his profile picture on that same platform to a picture in a Kentucky jersey. Did Stein see this go down in advance?

I can't confirm that big blue conspiracy theory, but I can tell any and every Kentucky fan that everything appears to be just fine. Losing a guy like Iveon Lewis to the current state of college football recruiting sucks, but the Cats have a similar option waiting in the wings

Breathe, BBN. We've got a few more months of this stuff coming in on a daily basis. We're all in this together.
