Kentucky Baseball set for SEC Tournament after critical series loss to Arkansas

The Bat Cats are looking ahead to the SEC Tournament after falling short in a high-scoring fireworks show to end their regular season.

After throwing out a midweek game against Northern Kentucky to prepare for this weekend's season finale series against the No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks, Nick Mingione and his Bat Cats plainly put it all on the line in the most crucial stretch of the season. And, after a game one victory, things seemed to be moving along exactly as planned.

Yet, one loss and a scary injury for Braxton Van Cleave later - BVC was thankfully released from the hospital - the Cats' postseason once again appeared in jeopardy as they looked to upset Arky in a do-or-die matchup at Kentucky Proud Park. After one of the most ludicrous games the venue has ever seen, Kentucky unfortunately fell short in the end.

From being down 10-0, to tying the matchup 12-12, to then trailing once more in what became the highest scoring game ever at KPP, the Cats vs. Backs had all the makings of an instant comeback classic.

Only, it's one Kentucky couldn't pull off. Now, the team must look forward to the SEC Tournament and do their best to shake off the events of the past two games. Not an ideal spot, to say the least.

Trying to Look Ahead

Set to face Vanderbilt in the first round of the tournament this coming Tuesday, the now 31-20 Wildcats are heading into a period of conference play that appears less than favorable.

The Commodores are certainly beatable, only holding a 32-24 overall record themselves - although, Vanderbilt did steal a series in Lexington to a 2-1 tally in April. But for a Kentucky team that started 18-3 before falling all the way to their current metric (including a less than favorable 13-17 conference metric) it's hard to carry much confidence into this one.

Even if the Bat Cats manage to stay off the bubble and eek into the NCAA Tournament from the get-go, this preseason Top 25 team hasn't done much to suggest any late-season heroics are in order.

Hoping For a Late-Season Miracle

Still, we've made it this far; in the spirit of hoping for a true miracle, the BBN is on board as always to ride this season out to the bitter end. The best case scenario, to me, is a world where the Wildcats mount some serious momentum in the SEC Tournament.

A few wins there could build a little energy heading into the NCAAT. From that point, about as much as we can ask for now would be for Kentucky to make things interesting with whatever higher seed they're pitted against.

You can't comfortably count Mingione and his crew out, but this year's bunch specifically have struggled to find the needed balance. There's a thin line between good and great, and this Cats squad toes it a little too often to be fully counted on with the season coming to a close.
