Kentucky Baseball gets season-saving win over Arkansas thanks to clutch closer

Thanks to some late-game heroics, the Bat Cats kept their tournament hopes alive in a home win over Arkansas.

Kentucky Baseball cancelled a midweek game to help prepare for their current, season-on-the-line series against the No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks. The break allowed the pitching staff to full reset, and the Wildcats ended up needing that versatility in the series-opener at Kentucky Proud Park.

Cats ace Jaxon Jelkin had thrown two consecutive complete games in his last two starts, but Nick Mingione called on him to slam the door shut against the Razorbacks. And Jelkin naturally obliged, pitching two innings out of the bullpen and earning his first-ever Division 1 save.

It came down to the wire, but with their backs against the bullpen, the Bat Cats gave their postseason chances a much-needed boost.

Getting a Pivotal Win

Things started smoothly for Kentucky, as Ethan Hindle opened up the 1st inning with a two-run homer off of Arkansas' ace Hunter Dietz. That gave the Cats the early momentum, and unlike so many unfortunate times in the last two years, the bullpen didn't give that lead away completely.

Kentucky would tack on another two runs in the 4th, thus carrying a 4-1 lead into the 7th inning. However, Arkansas would add one in the that same inning to help close the gap. That's when Mingione tagged Jelkin, who went on to allow one hit and one run, striking out two in the eventual victory.

The Cats' Postseason Odds

Heading into the final series of the regular season, Kentucky was No. 33 in the RPI rankings. A win over a highly-touted Arkansas team doesn't move them into a guaranteed spot just yet, but it sure helps eek the Cats off of the bubble.

Kentucky and Arkansas will play again 6:30 ET tonight. If you can't make it over to Kentucky Proud Park, you can stream it right here on SEC Network+.

Since Jelkin pitched out of the pen, tomorrow may be lefty Ben Cleaver's day (2-3,3.57 ERA); although he's only pitched more than four innings in two of 12 starts. If it is Cleaver, we'll have to hope for a little extra longevity.

Jelkin could technically go, but saving him for a potentially pivotal Saturday may make the most sense. If Kentucky wins, Mingione may even have a bullpen game for the season finale and get their rotation rested for postseason play.

A victory tonight would basically guarantee Kentucky will be playing in the NCAA Tournament. A loss? Things head into the final Saturday of the season on a tightrope. Let's hope the Bat Cats take care of business and get a little extra time to recover.
