The Bat Cats started this season 18-3 and in competition for the top seed in the SEC. From the jump, Nick Mingione's current squad appeared to be finally breaking through their ceiling in the way that his teams from the past few years have been threatening to do. Fans rejoiced early on, and they couldn't be blamed. Proud Park was rockin'.
Now, the team sits at 31-21 (13-17 in the SEC) and lost their first game as a 13-seed in the SEC Tournament. To say that things have soured would be an understatement; going into this series, the Wildcats were far fallen from grace, left to compete with a Commodores squad that had already taken a series in Lexington earlier this season.
With their NCAA Tournament fate on the line, the Wildcats have left the end of their controversial season entirely up to chance.
A trip to the tournament after this one may be rendered a big blue pipe dream.
Struggling to Maintain Momentum
The worst part about the team's loss in their opener, which finalized to an underwhelming 8-5 tally, was that the Wildcats held a 4-1 lead heading into the latter half of the contest. Before a mid-game pitching change, Kentucky seemed to have firm control of the script.

Yet, after Vandy posted four of their final eight runs in the bottom of the sixth, the seemingly stunned Cats never managed to recover that control. Jaxon Jelkin was quickly replaced by Jack Sams on the mound who, in spite of a fair start, did little to stop the Commodores' onslaught at that interval.
Out of Chances
What's worse? Vanderbilt is only a 12-seed in this tournament; if the Wildcats had kept their paws on the pedal and won, they'd face down a Florida team that just took care of them mere weeks ago in Gainesville.
Beat No. 5 Florida? You'd have had No. 4 Alabama. It was a frustrating, steep path from the start, but this is a team that had the season's fate in their hands earlier on, and even towards the midway point. It's a team with ample talent and a confusing inability to string it together on a consistent basis.
Even so, with a chance still on the horizon for more competition, the Big Blue Nation will back a squad that has shown postseason promise at their best. It's just that, at this point, the Cats may be out of opportunities to show it.
