J Batt's praise for Kentucky may have thrown some subtle shade at Michigan State

Kentucky's new athletic director wasn't afraid to take a shot at his former school on the way out.

Kentucky Athletics currently has the potential to enter a golden age. Not only has Mark Pope put together what has the potential to be his best roster yet on the men's basketball front, but Kenny Brooks and Will Stein, with women's hoops and football respectively, are also working to bring their programs back into the limelight. It's a full-on revival, at least it seems that way.

A revival that was furthered by the breaking hiring of J Batt as Kentucky's new athletics director. And, in replacing Mitch Barnhart and spurning Michigan State, Batt appeared to take a subtle shot at the Spartans on his way out.

Quoted by Matt Jones on X, Batt said of his new home in Lexington, "This is where our boys will graduate high school. I am here to stay. This is a destination job."

Ouch. That's gonna leave Spartans fans with a sore ego, but for the Big Blue Nation, I'm not sure Batt could've pieced together a better first impression than this one. I don't know if I speak for every Cats fan, but I'm all the way bought in.

Bought in With Batt

In his appearance on BBN Tonight, Batt went as far as to address the BBN directly, complimenting the fanbase that will be watching closely as he settles into one of the most important jobs on campus:

"I want them to know that they're important; that every single one of our fans matter. The strength of Big Blue Nation comes down to one individual and that person showing up in whatever way they can." That sounds like a guy who understands what Kentucky Athletics is all about.

On top of his ability to produce a compelling interview (major kudos), Batt's track record speaks for itself. He's hired multiple successful names at previous stops, such as Nate Oats at Alabama, and is well known for his ability as a fundraiser.

An Era of Money-First Athletics

In an era where college athletics is putting money first across basically every sport, you need a guy like Batt - someone that can come in and, no matter how grating the changes may be, adapt your school to the times.

Kentucky Athletics' ability to keep up with the trends goes beyond any one coach's ability to out-recruit other programs, although that will always help. It's a hire like Batt that can set a school apart in the long run.

The Wildcats struggled and bickered far too long with Barnhart pulling the strings. "The Battman" is here to turn Lexington into Gotham City, and the BBN should be thrilled from the outside looking in.
