Kentucky replaces Mitch Barnhart by hiring his opposite in the best possible way

Kentucky Athletics just replaced Mitch Barnhart with an athletic director who is refreshingly up to date.

Mitch Barnhart served in Kentucky's athletic director spot for a whopping 24 years. He saw a lone national title in basketball during that time, along with fair successes in other accompanying sports, but it's safe to say that Barnhart's overall reputation in Lexington fell far short of positive.

Between dishing out ludicrous, even lifelong contracts and stubborn statements regarding his indefensible decisions, it felt like the blue and white athletic director was on his way out for a long while. When the NIL era landed, especially, the need to replace Barnhart became painfully clear.

As Kentucky began to fall behind on the financial front, too, and while it took a full on state-wide controvery to keep Barnhart out of a money-first role that basically mimicked retirement, the former mainstay is now on his way out completely.

And it didn't take the school long to find his replacement.

Per Pete Nakos on X, Kentucky's rumored pursuit of Michigan State's Athletic Director has come to an official head. The University of Kentucky is set to hire J Batt as its next athletic director. "The Battman" is now a Wildcat and, according to Kentucky Athletics, will also serve as the CEO of Champions Blue, LLC.

A New Frontier With J Batt

Batt, who had just begun a six-year deal with the Spartans in the same position (tough luck for the guys in green), has garnered a reputation across college sports for both his refined financial literacy and string of knockout hires.

Regarding the former, Batt, during his time as an assistant athletic director at Alabama, led the charge for a 10-year, $600 million agreement to upgrade the Crimson Tide's football stadium. He's got a long list of accomplishments on that front that should bode well for the Cats' future finances.

Oh, and the man hired Nate Oats at Alabama. That was, and still is, arguably the biggest sleeper hire in the SEC. Throw Georgia Tech's Brent Key into the mix on the football front as another one of his hires as well, and you've got a well-rounded resume for a steadily rising name in athletics.

A Steadily Rising Name

Batt had just fired up the systems with Michigan State and has seemingly struck green gold with that deal, but it's hard to say no when President Eli Capilouto and Kentucky come calling. According to the aforementioned Nakos, "Sources view Batt’s hire as critical for roster fundraising for Will Stein and Mark Pope."

Further, the athletic director is seen as "one of the top fundraisers in college athletics," said Nakos.

This is the kind of hire that serves a reminder as to Kentucky's status in college athletics currently. Say what you will about recent struggles and staff turnover, but this is still Kentucky; elite is still elite, legacy is still legacy.

You get who you want in Lexington, and Batt is an ideal hire that was clearly circled as a must-get. He's a Cat!
