Michigan State fans left scrambling as Kentucky works to steal their athletic director

Kentucky's search for an athletic director may ultimately spell disaster for Michigan State fans.

Michigan State hired J Batt just last year with the hopes that the former Alabama Assistant Athletic Director stick around to fulfill his six-year contract. Though, thanks to the bigwigs in Lexington, he may already be on the way out.

After Mitch Barnhart announced he would step down, effective June 30th, University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto immediately set on a nationwide search to find a guy to lead athletics moving forward. With NIL changing daily and new rules flying in all the time, the importance of this move can't be understated.

Per Pete Thamel on X, the aforementioned Batt has emerged as the target of Kentucky's search. While no deal is yet in place, the Wildcats' brass are making a strong effort to land Michigan State's current athletic director.

So, what can the Big Blue Nation expect of (potentially) Mitch Barnhart's replacement?

J Batt is a Great Pick for the Current Athletics Landscape

J Batt has already proven he can build funds, working to help Alabama land a 10-year, $600 million deal to help give Bryant-Denny Stadium a facelift. According to ESPN, Batt "improved the fundraising standard by 60% over the prior best year" while at East Carolina, too. In other words, the man is a whiz on the financial front.

Naturally, Spartans fans are upset at this change in momentum.

Our friend Connor Muldowney, over at Wildcat Blue Nation's sister site Spartan Avenue, notes that Michigan State has likely lost its president and "an athletic director who was touted as an elite fundraiser and who also sought to make the Spartans elite in every sport," in the span of just a few months. Michigan State fan Andrew Cumbow, on X, outlined an attitude that may sound extremely familiar to Kentucky fans:

In short, Spartans fans want folks who want to be at the school on every level. "Get me guys who want to be at Michigan State," he said, to the tune of more than 400 likes.

And while Batt does have a tendancy to bounce around - he hasn't stayed at one place longer than two seasons since Alabama - the man's resume explains his status as a hot commodity. Having hired Nate Oats at Bama and Brent Key at Georgia Tech, two coaches operating at the top of their program's expectations even now, Batt would likely fit in just about anywhere.

He's exhibited excellence in just about every facet as an athletic director and, for an athletics system in Lexington that has felt behind the times for years, this looks like the perfect hire from an optics perspective. Let's hope the folks behind the scenes can close the gap and get this thing done.
