Tyran Stokes committing to Kansas exposed Mark Pope’s critical recruiting gamble

Mark Pope went all in on Tyran Stokes, and the result could put Kentucky far behind in his third season in Lexington.

In case you missed the incredibly awkward, painfully slow reveal, Tyran Stokes went on ESPN's NBA Tip-Off with the Inside the NBA crew to commit to Kansas. He passed out some trading cards and opened a box with a blue present inside. And then took about a minute to open that present with an NBA 2K case inside, officially ending the twisting recruitment of the No. 1 player in the class of 2026.

Mark Pope put all his eggs in the Tyran Stokes basket, and yet again, he comes up empty in a major recruitment. Kentucky will not have an NBA-level talent leading their program for the third straight year. A brutal break, to say the least.

Now, not all hope is lost, of course. There is a chance Pope's current team of portal guys - plus whoever he picks up with Stokes' leftover money - comes together to make a competitive team.

But there is also a chance Pope suffers dearly in his third year as a result of this gamble. The allure of Stokes is undeniable, to be fair; he does basically everything and will elevate the Jayhawks.

Pope Passed on Other Options For Stokes

All along the way, recruiting insiders reported Kentuckt as the obvious backup. And yet, Pope passed up the potential chance to sign Caleb Holt and Miikka Muurinen, among a handful more. Funnily enough, John Calipari - who landed Muurinen - was interested in Stokes back in August of last year. When it was clear he was looking for a big payday, Calipari bowed out and moved on. What would have happened if Pope had followed suit?

Regardless, Pope now has to lick his wounds after yet another crucial recruiting miss. Stokes joins Christian Collins and Caleb Wilson as blue and white possibilities that turned heel under Pope. Kentucky has a roster built around Tyran Stokes, only without him actually on it.

Currently, 247Sports has Kentucky at slotted No. 15 in the country regarding the Cats' portal class, and a dismal No. 90 in high school recruiting. In that specific category, Kentucky is behind powerhouse programs such as Austin Peay, Penn, East Carolina, and Toledo.

Recruiting ranks aren't the end-all be-all, but they are a valid indicator. All the BBN can do (for their own sake) is kick back, cheer on the guys we have, and hope an incredible backup plan is in place.
