While it's well worth getting excited for what the nation's No. 2 overall quarterback Jake Nawrot will bring to Lexington beginning in the 2027-28 class, Kentucky fans can't overlook the quarterback under center in Will Stein's first year. Flipping Kenny Minchey from Nebraska was huge for the 2026-27 Wildcats' potential to surprise some folks in the SEC.
And, according to Minchey himself, making that last-second decision before signing with the Cornhuskers was simple. The signal caller wanted to play for the best, and the best now resides at Kroger Field.
"The bit of success they [Kentucky] had previously without everybody coming in, it was very appealing," Minchey said in a clip posted on X by Kentucky Football (originally from AP Steadham, Wilson Alexander).
"I want to go play for the best," Minchey continued with a grin. "and that's Stein and Sloan."
High praise for Coach Stein and Coach Sloan 🤩

That's tough talk from the Wildcats' leading man, but why else would Stein and offensive coordinator Joe Sloan have had so much success on the recruiting trail up to now, even beyond Minchey? Something about the pitch in Lexingon is just plain gold.
When it comes to the position under center specifically, it isn't hard to see why everybody and their mothers (see his mother's day nod) wants to play for Will Stein.
Stein's NFL Pipeline
On top of his nation-leading offenses at Oregan as the play-caller there, Stein has sent both Bo Nix and Dillon Gabriel to the NFL as a result of his well-known system.
Nix, especially, has pieced together an impressive early career; you couldn't ask for a better recruiting bullet point than "I turned that guy into a playoff-contending NFL quarterback, and I can do the same thing with you."
On top of Stein, Sloan had the LSU Tigers' offense humming to a similarly impressive tune in 2024, wherein they ranked No. 2 in the SEC and No. 7 nationally in passing offense. LSU's dip in the following year, as Brian Kelly was on the way out, shouldn't much worry Cats fans.
And clearly, it isn't worrying recruits, either. Kentucky got a hungry playmaker waiting to breakout in Minchey.
Vying for a Breakout
After narrowly losing the starting job at Notre Dame just one season ago (to a guy now making his own national waves in CJ Carr), Minchey is ready to get his "get back," as they say.
Fitted with receiving weapons like four-star Kenny Darby and DJ Miller, Minchey has everything he needs to lead a Wildcats offense that, for once, may actually like to pass the football. This is real life, BBN. We're really turning the page.
Kentucky Football may be in the midst of a rebuild and fresh off their most brutal season in recent memory, but a pairing like Stein and Sloan truly has a case for being, as Minchey said, "the best" of the best.
I may have added that last bit myself, but you get the picture.
