Mark Pope's popularity has waxed and waned since his hiring in Lexington just a little over two years ago. Cats fans initially embraced the hometown head coach and, even in light of a historically bad season this past year, the Big Blue Nation continues (for the most part) to support him.
Though it's support that comes with a catch: Fans want Pope to keep his promise of a ninth championship banner. It's clear that things simply haven't come together on an elite scale just yet for Pope - what with injuries and recruiting mishaps abounding - but year three feels like a real chance to turn things around.
And while some folks on the outside looking in may think Kentucky fans can be too harsh on their well-meaning lead-man, Coach Pope himself has no problem with the consistent criticism.
In a one-on-one interview with Darrell Bird and CatsPause, Pope said of the heat, "If you have a glass chin, don't take the Kentucky job." You can't be mad at that.
An Iron Chin
Apparently, Pope's iron chin allows him to sustain the flurry of punches thrown by the BBN on a regular basis. To him, it's simply a part of the job that he must've kept in mind well before he put blue ink to paper.

"It's just part of the deal here," Pope continued. "It's just baked in the cake. We were hired to win." Some fans could be quick to forget that Coach Pope had a No. 10 Ketucky team beating the eventual national champion Florida Gators (then No. 6 nationally) in Rupp Arena.
He's exhibited his fair share of green and red flags, but at his best, Pope has proved an ability to compete with the best teams in college basketball. From here on out, it's about staying healthy (and landing desired recruits) if he's to fully put the pieces together.
The BBN Just Cares
"It comes from care," Pope went on, attributing the criticism to a positive origin. "There's just such passionate caring about this program."
Even the angriest Wildcat fans will have a hard time blaming their head coach for this one. Say what you will about Mark Pope, but his own care for the team - as well as for the very fans that fill his replies upon every recruiting miss - is plainly apparent.
Year three will be a pivotal year for Pope's time in Lexington; the ceiling of expectation has been raised, in spite of last season's struggles, and he knows it. It's also clear that the roster, at least up to now, isn't exactly how he'd envisioned it.
Even so, we've got a guy on the sidelines for the right reason at Rupp Arena. As far as I'm concerned, it's worth rallying behind the coach that we have in the hopes that this season is the one in which his vision finally breaks through.
