Ryan Hampton not reclassifying means Mark Pope has only one option on the wing

With five-star Ryan Hampton deciding not to reclassify, Kentucky and Mark Pope seem to have only one obvious option left on the wing.

With Malachi Moreno now officially back for his sophomore season in Lexington (phew), Mark Pope's third-year roster seems to be approaching full completion. The Cats are working with a varied class of transfers and recruits from different corners of the player pool.

This time around, Coach Pope seemed to both recruit to fit his particular offensive style, as well as to balance a roster that had previously suffered from a lack of certainty at pivotal playmaking positions. Point guard, of course, was not the least of these. Kentucky has overloaded at that spot.

But a starting spot on the wingseems to remain open, with Kam Williams perhaps temporarily filling a spot that had been initially carved out for Tyran Stokes. And while five-star recruit Ryan Hampton seemed to be a pivot possibility, that has now officially faded.

Per a video from The Field of 68 on X, Hampton confimed his intention to stay in the 2027 class, instead of reclassifying to potentially join a roster this year. While Kentucky remains in hot pursuit for next season, Hampton's holding out appears to leave Pope and his staff with one option.

Milan Momcilovic Remains

Enter, to no surprise of the Big Blue Nation's, Milan Momcilovic. The lengthy scoring wing has caught the attention of a number of programs in the transfer portal, with Kentucky and Louisville perhaps leading the charge in his recruitment.

The only catch remains, as it was with Moreno, his potential to stay in the NBA Draft. Although, with only two days remaining until Momcilovic has to make that choice, it won't be long at all until suitors have to close in and make their pitch to the 48% three-point shooter.

With Hampton off the board, Kentucky has to be at the pressing forefront of those suitors. This is an ultimate, ceiling-raising grab for Mark Pope.

Raising Kentucky's Ceiling

In my opinion, the team Kentucky already has is more than capable of competing in the SEC, to a certain extent. I don't believe we're currently looking at a roster capable of a national (or even a conference) title, necessarily, but I do think it's a squad that could come together by the end of the season and make the biggest push of any Pope team yet.

The talent, experience, and sensibility are all there, at least on paper. But Momcilovic is that special sort of asset that raises the floor and ceiling at the same time.

There may be other lurking options in the transfer portal or on the recruiting trail if this one falls through, but for as many big fish as Kentucky have missed on this offseason, snagging Momcilovic seems like the perfect answer to every detractor of the blue and white.

He's Mark Pope's white whale, and the Cats appear closer than every to actually making it happen. It'll be a matter of cutting a massive check and beating out other programs from here.
