Mark Pope appears to confirm Kentucky fans’ fears on the Tyran Stokes saga

Many Kentucky fans were worried that no real backup plan existed aside from Tyran Stokes, and it appears that they may have been right.

The Tyran Stokes saga has, for the most part, seemed to have worn off on the Big Blue Nation. It wasn't something that ever could've been dumped immediately - being spurned by a recruit the program publicly pursued for nearly a year is bound to hurt - but Cats fans have had ample time to cope with his commitment to Kansas.

Yet, much of the discussion since Stokes' decision has been based around the sheer level to which Mark Pope banked his roster on it. Whether or not Kentucky takes another route at small forward is yet to be seen, but the head coach himself just seemingly confirmed that the Wildcats were all-in.

In a video on X answering questions from the BBN, Pope addressed the Stokes recruitment, saying, "...this year, we were chasing a generational talent, and we fell a little short. But we weren't sitting on our hands, we've put together a roster that we are going to love watching crush it at Rupp Arena."

Kentucky did put together a roster aside from Stokes, but the question is a little different: Can this team be considered complete without him?

Fearing an Incomplete Team

Pope's statement, while plainly honest and commendable, seems to confirm that he'd put all his eggs in the Tyran Stokes basket. And while Kentucky could still make a move at his position, Pope highlighting the roster as it exists right now could be taken as him expressing satisfaction in it.

One more complimentary piece at the five, as he suggests, and this thing could be tied off with a big blue bow. That would naturally mean Kam Williams starts where Stokes was supposed to, and that's all well and good, to an extent.

I personally believe Williams fits well with Zoom Diallo, Alex Wilkins, and Kentucky's other anticipated starters, but it's hard to gloss over the seemingly clear reality that this wasn't Pope's intention. Regardless of the potential positives within, that would almost seem like accepting defeat on the recruiting trail.

The Truth is Complicated

Then again, maybe that was partly the point of the video in the first place.

But in that case, what's to be made of the money left behind by Stokes? If Kentucky's offer was set to, alongside Kansas' own, make Stokes the highest paid freshman in the history of college basketball, the Wildcats won't burn that entirely on a backup center.

For as solid as the answers Pope gave in his video were, it almost feels as if this issue specifically only got more complicated. We'll see in the coming weeks whether or not the staff has a backup plan in the wings, and how exactly their remaining NIL is to be spent, if at all.
