Will Stein, even in the midst of Kentucky Football's most successful recruiting stretch in years, is no stranger to being doubted. Consistently, both the head coach himself and the 2026-27 team as a whole have been placed toward the bottom of the SEC in early power rankings. Few folks are expecting anything of Stein's current squad outside of Lexington.

Now, as if to add insult to injury, On3 just posted ESPN FPI's strength of schedule ranking, listing out the anticipated top 20 hardest schedules. As expected, SEC teams are all over this list, but the Wildcats coming in all the way up at No. 4 may take the breath away from some excited members of the Big Blue Nation.

We already know that Coach Stein isn't scared of this daunting slate, but to see Kentucky situated among the most treacherous schedules in all of college football isn't exactly a comforting visual.

If Stein is to mount the middling expectations that currently plague his first year and, by some stretch, make a bowl game, he'll have to contend with the best in the SEC on a regular basis.

Contending with the SEC

Outside of early-season bouts with Youngstown State (week one) and South Alabama (week four), Kentucky's slate is essentially "all gas" the entire way through. It just doesn't stop.

In the second week of football, the Alabama Crimson Tide (sure to be ranked high) will come to Kroger Field, which the Cats will follow just one week later with a road battle against a similar conference juggernaut in the Texas A&M Aggies.

From there, you've got South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Missouri all on the road, with matches at Kroger Field against LSU, Vanderbilt, Florida, and Louisville breaking things up. I'd tell you to breathe, Cats fans, but I'm not sure we'll have time to.

The only saving grace in all of this competitive mess is that Stein carries enough promise as a coach to inspire a little underdog hope in the BBN.

Stein's Promise as a Head Coach

Kentucky isn't the only spot that Stein could've been given a shot; his track record for sending quarterbacks to the NFL, as a result of running leading offenses year after year with the Oregon Ducks.

He's also proven his ability to dominate the recruiting trail (mostly weighted to the 2027-28 class), too, suggesting there's something in his pitch compelling players to give Kentucky Football a real shot.

I don't know about you, but you don't build a top 25 class two years out - prior to touching the field even once - if players expect to sit at the bottom of your conference. There's something more to Stein's ever-growing regime at Kroger Field, both for his highly touted 2027 recruiting class and for the team we've got at hand.
