Fantasy football has become a modern mainstay of the wider sports scene. Fans and analysts alike gather around every fall to draft players and bicker with one another online (my favorite part) about their own sleeper pickups and go-to stashes. But for years, that fun has been relegated to the NFL in the mainstream... until now.
In a blockbuster announcement, Yahoo Sports made official the integration of college football into their wider network of fantasy sports. For the Big Blue Nation specifically, this means ushering in Will Stein's first season at Kroger Field by selecting his guys on your own fantasy team.
Check out Yahoo's full release video on YouTube, cleverly revealed through words plastered on players' mouth guards:
Dubbed a "New Era of (College) Fantasy Football," Yahoo's new system is, in their own words, "uniquely built for the modern college game and the millions of people who live for Saturdays in the fall."
That sounds like the BBN to me.
The game will feature players from the Power 4 conferences (including Notre Dame - pick a league already), along with deeper benches (18 total players) to accommodate increased depth on the collegiate level and a designated team “Offense" roster position. The latter is the most interesting detail of the bunch.
Inside the Team Offense
In a completely unique feature to mainstream fantasy football in general, users will have the option to draft a team's entire offense to their roster. A team’s touchdowns, total yards, field goals made, and wins will earn you points, while turnovers and losses will, of course, lose them.
Much like the fantasy angle has widely enriched fan engagement on the professional level, it won't be long before droves of folks from every corner get involved here, too.
Now, not only do we get to worry about how our Wildcats are doing on the field as it relates to their overall record, but we'll be keeping a close eye on the ones we've nabbed for our fantasy crews, too. One thing is certain: If Will Stein's offense is available, I'm taking that from the jump.
Cheering for Kentucky in Multiple Manners
Essentially, diehard fans have been given another level of involvement when it comes to Kentucky Football. As the program resets this season and Coach Stein starts the journey of turning the blue and white on the gridiron into a legitimate SEC threat, BBN can work to collect his Wildcats on fantasy rosters across the Bluegrass.
I'm gonna go ahead and plant my flag in Kenny Minchey in the first round. That's my quarterback on the field and on the phone, both.
