Recent SEC quarterback ranking should add fuel to Kenny Minchey's fire at Kentucky

Kenny Minchey can add yet another public doubter to his list of those to prove wrong while at Kentucky.

Kentucky Football, in spite of head coach Will Stein's widespread recruiting success in his first offseason, have not entirely shaken doubters outside of Lexington. In fact, by all objective measures, Stein's first season is expected to go about as poorly as Mark Stoops' last one did. Now, the doubts are even extending down to Wildcat quarterback Kenny Minchey.

Minchey, who transferred in from Notre Dame to helm Stein and coordinator Joe Sloan's offense in the 2026-27 season, was just slated in double-digit territory in On3's SEC quarterback rankings. It's the toughest conference in football, but the BBN have to be burnt out on hearing back things about whoever is wearing blue and white under center.

Zach Calzada last year was one thing - his social media money spreading nearly tore Kroger Field apart - but Minchey is a different beast entirely. The same guy that nearly won the starting job at Notre Dame is approaching a new and improved season in Lexington.

But if he's going to be doubted, he may as well take it to heart. Minchey can use his middling expectations to take a potentially underrated Cats team to new heights.

Taking Kentucky to New Heights

I'm not going to be the completely off the rails fan that thinks Kentucky is winning the SEC; I'll put those whims off a year, at least. But Minchey's capabilities, even if still unproven on a consistent basis, should elevate this team beyond the four-win mark.

If nothing else, can we not trust Stein's track record with passers? Current Denver Broncos franchise quarterback Bo Nix was a product of Stein at Oregon, and so was Dillon Gabriel, who got extensive clock with the Cleveland Browns as a starter last year.

His offenses were consistently among the best in the nation, and with Joe Sloan coming over from LSU as well, Minchey joined two of college football's most refined scoring minds.

The quarterback said it himself, after all. He came to Kentucky to play for the best.

Playing for (and With) the Best

And not only will Minchey play for the best, but he'll have plenty of knockout options around him to advance his case under center. Arguably the most promising of that group is four-star freshman receiver Kenny Darby, who followed the aforementioned Sloan from LSU.

But factor in DJ Miller, whose progress Minchey personally vouched for, and the returning Hardley Gilmore IV, and you've got a corps of playmakers that will help Minchey make his case.

Of course, a rebuilding Kentucky team will need a lot more than a good quarterback to win and win big. But without that very luxury in recent years, Minchey running the offense changes the perception of this team's capabilities entirely in the SEC.

Call me crazy, but I like Kentucky higher than four wins and Minchey higher than that No. 10 spot, both.
