It can be a difficult adjustment to keep tabs on recruiting for the first few months of the offseason, only to shift to accepting your team as-is and begin worrying about exactly how they'll mesh together. While Kentucky may not be entirely done with the current roster, Mark Pope's squad is at least almost complete, and those already on board have officially taken the floor together in Lexington.
For analytics purposes (and as a means of team-building), the new-look Cats participated in a team combine this past week ahead of actual summer practice, which began today. The social media team, which is always top-notch, released a series of videos of the event, showcasing our guys getting to know one another on the floor amidst a series of drills.
On X, Tristan Pharis reposted one of these videos with early notes about the team attached.
The two big takeaways? Forward Justin McBride arrived in better shape than he was expected to, and expected starting point guard Zoom Diallo has emerged as an early vocal leader. Let's dive into those.
A Closer Look at the Takeaways
Starting with McBride, the senior transfer who most recently shot a 40% three-ball in a starting role with the James Madison Dukes, BigBlueDylan rumored that the anticipated bench scorer has lost upwards of 20 pounds this offseason.
An image provided with Dylan's post on X evidences this report. McBride looks like he's in the best shape of his career, and he's still got most of the offseason ahead of him to continue to work.

McBride was already a strong physical scorer prior to his commitment to Kentucky, but his first step and general lateral movement left a little speed to be desired. As he continues to refine his figure, the Cats should only see improvement in his game.
When it comes to Diallo, the benefit there is self-explanatory. Coach Pope's best days in Lexington thus far were led by the commanding Lamont Butler in the backcourt. Last season, the Wildcats desperately missed a leader like that.
The Return of Pope's System
A guy who can come in and not only control the offense, but the pace of the game. If Diallo is already trending that way, we could be in for the return of a system operating at full power. Add a shooter like Milan Momcilovic into that mix, and you've essentially got Pope's dream layout on paper.
On the whole, Kentucky's coach will have everything he needs this year to put together his best campaign yet. If we keep getting positive early hits like these, the excitement for men's basketball may fully return, without caution, to Lexington.
All Pope has to do is turn his recent recruiting success into results on the hardwood. For now, I believe most of the BBN has bought back in.
