Will Stein has been on fire on the recruiting trail this offseason, landing a handful of top-shelf prospects for the 2027-28 season in particular. Yet, while it's more than okay to be excited about the football program's future right now, the BBN shouldn't overlook the exciting season that lies directly ahead of them.

In this year's Spring Game - Stein's first behind the big blue wheel - fans who showed up early at Kroger Field got an exciting look at the 2026-27 in action for the first time. In spite of some players holding out to ensure their health come kickoff in the fall, the guys who did participate gave fans plenty to be excited about.

In addition to the game itself, the team also put on live drills for those in attendance, with Will Stein manning a microphone (and dropping a curse word or two) in the process. Spring has sprung, BBN, and Kentucky Football is officially anew.

An Emotional Moment For Stein

As Stein ran out of the tunnel at Kroger Field for the first time, the head coach said he got emotional: "...like a wave running over me," he said, "and very, very cool."

From there, it was go-time as the team was pitted against one another in a blue-white battle. What ended in a 23-18 victory for the blue team. Keep in mind that this game was scored differently, with the defense also being granted points for stops and turnovers.

All the same, you wouldn't be remiss for saying that quarterback Kenny Minchey's highlights were the most exciting aspect of the whole ordeal.

Not only did Minchey look on-point throughout the event (with a dot over the middle to tight end Willie Rodriguez being a particular highlight), but the signal caller also ran in an athletic touchdown in a red zone sequence.

Minchey, of course, led the blue team.

An Exciting Season Preview

Although, team blue wasn't flawless. Kevis Thomas got up for a red zone interception for the white team, exhibiting equal defensive promise and signaling a well-rounded roster.

All-in-all, the Spring Game - as lighthearted and fun as it is - served the perfect early look at what may end up being the most exciting season the Cats on the gridiron has seen in years. Will Stein has come out of the gate hot in multiple facets, and this event is simply the latest evidence that he's got the football program moving in the right direction.
