It feels like just yesterday Tyrese Maxey was lighting up Madison Square Garden in his Kentucky debut, dropping 26 points off the bench against Michigan State back in 2019. That electrifying performance announced the arrival of a future star.

Five years later, Maxey isn't just a star; he's a supernova.

Picking up where he left off

In the Philadelphia 76ers' thrilling 117-116 season-opening victory over the rival Boston Celtics on Wednesday night, Maxey was simply sensational. The former Wildcat poured in 40 points, showcasing the dazzling offensive arsenal that has made him one of the NBA's most exciting young guards.

His efficiency was remarkable: 13-of-24 shooting from the field, including a blistering 7-of-9 from three-point range, and a near-perfect 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. He added 6 assists and 2 steals, controlling the game down the stretch with clutch plays.

From 21st pick to franchise cornerstone

Maxey’s journey from being the 21st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft to becoming the undisputed heart and soul of the Sixers has been incredible to watch. His infectious energy, ever-present smile, and relentless work ethic have endeared him to fans in Philly just as they did in Lexington. Even with Joel Embiid often injured, Maxey is putting up big time stats.

Kentucky fans, of course, still lament the "what if" of the 2019-20 season. That team won the SEC regular-season title and seemed poised for a deep March run before the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly canceled the NCAA Tournament, robbing BBN of "Maxey Madness."

Making BBN proud in the pros

While we never got to see him cut down nets in Kentucky blue and white, Maxey is more than making up for it on the NBA stage. He didn't need March to prove he was built for the biggest moments; he's proving it every night. But man, that would have been a fun ride.

Other former Wildcats also made noise on opening night:

  • Anthony Davis (Mavs): 22 points, 13 rebounds vs. Spurs
  • PJ Washington (Mavs): 17 points, 5 rebounds vs. Spurs
  • Karl-Anthony Towns (Knicks): 19 points, 11 rebounds vs. Cavs
  • Bam Adebayo (Heat): 15 points, 12 rebounds vs. Magic
  • Julius Randle (Timberwolves): 19 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists vs. Blazers

Maxey might be leading the charge, but the BBNBA connection remains as strong as ever. Even though there is a big time issue happening in the NBA right now, no Kentucky player has been linked.
