Alright, folks, Tyran Stokes is clearly the number 1 player in the 2026 class. He even added a double-double in the McDonald's All-American game, and now everyone believes his recruitment is nearing its denouement, or maybe not.

News broke on the 30th that Joe Tipton believed Stokes would commit at the McDonald's All-American game, and then, within a couple of hours, he took that back. That's just how it's been every single time for the Kentucky basketball target.

Tyran Stokes keeps everyone guessing

Tyran Stokes' senior year of high school started at Notre Dame. He even went out for football, and then rumors spread that he was involved in fights and had left the school. He found his way to Rainier Beach and, unsurprisingly, has kept up the surprises.

Back in October of 2025, outlets reported that Stokes could commit to Kentucky basketball before Halloween. And that obviously did not come to pass. Then news came out that he had dropped the final 3: Kentucky, Oregon, and Kansas. And within a couple of weeks, Vanderbilt had entered the chat and then dropped back out.

Kansas stood out as the only non-Nike school, and that matters because Tyran Stokes is a Nike athlete. What that means is that he would have a lot more promotional money tie-ins if he went to a Nike school.

But like Cooper Flagg at Duke when he signed with New Balance, there are ways around it.

And all other things equal, it is going to come down to who makes the best connection with the phenom.

National analysts agree an announcement is imminent or a ways away

“I think [his decision] is coming after the Nike Hoop Summit [April 11],” Paul Biancardi said during ESPN’s coverage of the McDonald’s All-American Game last night.

And in typical Tyran Stokes fashion, another ESPN analyst said no way.

ESPN analyst Cory Alexander said that he believes Stokes is very close to Cade Cunningham in terms of his game, and that he is not anywhere near a commitment.

“He’s in no rush….You may want to wait [for the portal to kick in],” he said.

In other words, it could be tomorrow, but it could be the end of the month. But it does appear Bill Self is in the lead and could be the reason he has yet to commit.

Bill Self's health is a key

Bill Self has had a couple of health scares recently, and rumors abound that the Kansas head coach may retire. If he does retire, then that would leave Tyran Stokes with a decision to make. Would he go with the Jayhawks under a new coach, or would he fall into Mark Pope's lap?

Those around Kentucky's program are building a roster as if Stokes is coming, and that is a dangerous game. If you grab guys to fit around Stokes, and Tyran goes to Kansas, Mark Pope's year 3 becomes a disaster before it starts.

At some point, Kentucky has to decide whether to wait on a superstar, or build a roster that’s ready without him.
