NBA legend could be Kentucky's X-factor if he joins Mark Pope's coaching staff

According to a recent report, the alluring possibility of Jamal Crawford joining Mark Pope's coaching staff is not yet out of the question.

Kentucky adding former NBA All-Star Mo Williams to the coaching staff earlier this offseason felt like a promising outreach to improve recruiting efforts. Williams, in addition to bringing his four-star son with him, has since been Mark Pope's second-hand man on the recruiting trail. It'll probably be a year's cycle before we see his full impact, but thus far, the addition seems promising.

Although, Kentucky isn't wasting any time to see if this experiment pays off. According to KSR, the Cats' long-rumored pursuit of NBA legend Jamal Crawford to fill the team's final assistant coach spot hasn't ceased.

And not only that, but Crawford hasn't officially closed the door on the possibility. While he was initially seen as a gateway to Tyran Stokes' recruitment, having coached Stokes, the upside of his potential hiring still clearly appeals to Coach Pope and his regime.

Oh the idea that Crawford's spot on the staff died with Stokes committing to Kansas, KSR reports: "That’s not the case, he says, confirming that he remains in talks with Kentucky and Pope about the position and is serious about getting into coaching."

Talks Are Ongoing

Crawford, while never quite reaching superstar level in the NBA, played for 20 seasons for a number of different franchises. In that (insane) amount of time, "The Crawsover" developed a reputation as a steely rotation guy who can get you a bucket when it's needed.

Since leaving the league, Crawford has worked his way up the coaching ladder, so much so that Kentucky's interest remains active even in spite of the No. 1 overall recruit leaving the picture.

"Crawford tells KSR that other schools have expressed interest, as well, but Kentucky is the only job he is seriously considering, crediting his longstanding relationship with Mark Pope, thanks to their deep Washington ties, and his respect for the program’s brand."

Professional Ties

Much can be argued about Mark Pope, but his impressive ties to the professional level are undeniable, and the potential pull that a guy with years of NBA experience could have on recruits is equally so.

Regardless of Crawford's ultimate decision, the Big Blue Nation should take some comfort in Crawford's vocal confidence in what Pope is building at Kentucky. A "tick up" of sorts in the incoming season, given another strong addition, appears firmly in the cards.

Still, the weight of his addition will continue to weight on fans and onlookers until Crawford makes his call, one way or another. It's clear that Kentucky isn't closing the door anytime soon and, to me, the longer we go without a no, the better.

Wait this one out, BBN. A win here could lead to tons more down the line.
