There is a quarterback controversy brewing in Big Blue Nation, and rightfully so; Kentucky football is bad this year. There's no way around that reality, and the quarterback play has been less than desirable. We have seen three quarterbacks which has been a mixed bag of potential and success.
This week, Kentucky fans have been calling for head coach Mark Stoops to bench starting quarterback Brock Vandagriff and let freshman Cutter Boley get the start. Even some are calling for Boley to finish out the season. They know what they have in Vandagriff, and they'd rather let the young quarterback develop in live game action.
That won't be the case, as Stoops said in his weekly presser that he was sticking with Vandagriff, saying, "He's earned it." However, that wasn't the end of what Stoops had to say about his starting quarterback. He went on to explain away his interception against Murray State. He told reporters that the route was supposed to be a post and not a go route, and it was a miscommunication between the quarterback and the wide receiver that led to the pick.
Stoops also mentioned how he would like to see multiple quarterbacks on this roster return next year. This was a weird mention in so many ways. Yet, it's an acknowledgment of what fans have been thinking. Vandagriff doesn't fit the Butch Hamdan system and will probably look to transfer. Gavin Wimsatt was a bust and will also probably look to find another school.
There's also the fear that Cutter Boley will be recruited away. This is one more reason Big Blue Nation is hoping Stoops will let Boley run the show for the final two games and begin to see the team as his team going into next year.
Or maybe it's because Vandagriff truly hasn't earned it. There have been flashes of both good and bad from the starting quarterback. He's created plays with his legs but also absolutely floundered on drives and missed throws. There may not be a quarterback on the roster that can beat Texas, but it certainly doesn't feel like Vandagriff is the best option for the future.
