Kentucky football fans are begging for to Stoops to change it up at a key position
It’s been a frustrating season for Kentucky football fans, with the offense failing to find its footing week after week. After Murray State, where many young players got to make their mark, many in Big Blue Nation are calling for a shake-up at quarterback. The combination of Brock Vandagriff and Gavin Wimsatt has yet to deliver consistent results.
Vandagriff, the starter, has shown flashes of promise but has struggled badly at times with an awful offensive line. There is no other way to say it: Murray State got 3 sacks against Kentucky, which is inexcusable.
With 1,542 passing yards, 9 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions on a 57% completion rate, Brock has been serviceable at times but far from reliable.
Meanwhile, Wimsatt, used mostly in select packages for his mobility(he did get extended play time at various points), has been even less effective in the passing game. His 40% completion rate, along with just 162 passing yards, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions, has fans questioning his ability to contribute beyond his rushing ability, and even there, it's not great. He has 102 yards rushing.
The lack of production at quarterback is emblematic of the offense’s overall struggles, which have plagued the Wildcats all season. Poor offensive line play, an inconsistent run game, and questionable play-calling have compounded the problem.
However, for many fans, the blame begins at quarterback. QB is a position that demands leadership and consistency, both of which have been in short supply so far this season.
That’s why Cutter Boley’s performance against Murray State has sparked so much excitement. Though it came in a game, few would call a masterpiece, Boley’s poise, arm talent, and decision-making in limited action were enough to get fans talking.
Many are clamoring for the freshman to get more reps, hoping he can provide a spark to an offense that desperately needs one.
Kentucky’s coaching staff faces a tough decision moving forward. Do they stick with Vandagriff, hoping he can right the ship after they hype of his recruitment? Do they expand Wimsatt’s role, betting on his dual-threat ability? Do they hand the reins to Boley, rolling the dice on a potential future star with no real downside, as he can still redshirt? Or do they do what they have done all year, rotate players in and out?
Whatever the decision, one thing is clear: Big Blue Nation won’t tolerate more of the same. With the season on the brink of the massive failure of missing a bowl game, fans are ready for change and they’re looking at quarterback to deliver it.
