It took Mark Pope a while to get a hold on high school recruiting as the head coach at Kentucky, but by George, does he seem to have a grasp now. Pope and his staff hit the gas on the No. 1 player in the 2027 recruiting class, Marcus Spears Jr., essentially right after landing his first five-star freshman in Ryan Hampton. He's showing no signs of slowing down, either.
Per Sam Kayser on X, five-star center (also in the 2027-28 bunch) Darius Wabbington, out of Sunnyslope in Phoenix, has shaved his list of potential colleges down to six. In line with the blue and white's recent recruiting momentum, Kentucky finds themselves among this bunch. That's a good news.
The bad news, unfortunately, is a little heavier. Not only do the Wildcats not yet have an official visit scheduled with Wabbington (a prime window for a commitment), but Louisville has the first visit. Before Wabbington touches down in Arizona or Texas, he'll be in cahoots with Pat Kelsey on September 11.
It's hard to count Mark Pope out right now, at any juncture, but the early signs for this one aren't all blue. In addition to Kentucky, Louisville, Arizona, and Texas, Indiana and North Carolina also made the cut. It's a real Power 5 showdown for the potential star big.

A Power 5 Showdown for Darius Wabbington
Take one look at Wabbington's profile, though, and it isn't hard to see why some of the nation's biggest schools are lining up for a shot at his services.
The 6-foot-11 five-man - ranked No. 13 nationally by 247Sports - offers a versatile skillset in the post, perhaps operating best with his back to the basket and in cutting lanes behind defenders. He's got a strong frame and, much like Malachi Moreno, promises more physical growth in the future.
To that point, it's in Moreno that Kentucky's future need of Wabbington would come into full effect.
Kentucky's Need for Wabbington
As a result of his own rising draft stock (he nearly left for the NBA this offseason), Moreno is almost sure to head to the professional level after another year in Lexington. In that gap, the Wildcats will go from a two-year center with a ton of experience in Coach Pope's system to absolute ground zero.
In Wabbington, the Cats would have the opportunity to reset the clock at one of the most important and scarce positions in college basketball right now. His build and metrics are comparable to Moreno, although his athletic ceiling already seems higher.
The stakes are higher too, of course, with Kentucky pitted against Louisville. When you're battling those guys, every win is worth a whole lot more... but that also means that every loss hurts that much worse.
Mark Pope will be looking to avoid a conundrum at center and gain some brownie points over his Bluegrass rival in this ongoing recruitment,
