Mark Pope has his Kentucky team bonding out on the lake in typical Bluegrass fashion

Mark Pope is known for making extensive efforts in the community, and Kentucky Men's Basketball's social media this week has been full of flicks from the team's summer fun. With camp having ended on Thursday, Pope wasted no time in getting his revamped group of guys out into the Bluegrass.

After helping build a new gazebo for the UK Cancer Center in Hazard, the 2026-27 Wildcats took to the lake. The resulting pictures are endlessly entertaining, featuring players from all kinds of different backgrounds taking part in an activity that many of the Big Blue Nation are undoubtedly familiar with.

We got Jerone Morton... singing? He's holding a microphone, and Mark Pope is cutting up with the rest of the team in an accompanying picture. I'm not exactly sure what's going on there, but it look like the group is having a blast with one another before things get serious this fall.

Justin McBride even went live on social media, allowing Cats fans to tune in to the group's lake outing. Malachi Moreno may need to work on his dance moves, but otherwise, this is a positive takeaway for this program for one reason.

Last year's team struggled mightily with chemistry and effort in the public eye. Seeing Coach Pope take early efforts to avoid that issue is telling sign that things will be different this time around.

Mark Pope is Working Hard to Avoid Another Chemistry Issue for Kentucky

Shouting "touch money" in the huddle was bad enough. Our most recent group of Wildcats were criticized loudly for seemingly celebrating the absurdity of their NIL makings, which were made worse in the face of that team's problems.

Consistently, pundits on the outside questioned their work ethic and pointed out how, at times, the team didn't seem concerned with keeping up. Brandon Garrison got a rare Mark Pope chew-out at Rupp Arena for failing to get back on a fast break, and was then promptly benched.

For as much flack as Coach Pope took for the way he coached that team, it's an admittedly good luck for him to be pushing this group to get close off the court. Making them live shoulder-to-shoulder in the Wildcat Coal Lodge was an early nod to his efforts, too.

Now, we'll just have to cross our fingers that this positive energy translates to the hardwood. You'd have to be a real pessimist as a fan to see stuff like this and not crack a smile though.

However, if Pope manages to add another player in the transfer portal, the Wildcats better get him out on a boat as soon as possible. No loose ends.
