Mark Pope's foot remains firmly on the recruiting pedal for Kentucky's current team. While most everyone expected things to wrap up with Milan Momcilovic's commitment, the recent eligibility ruling that looks to clear a batch of fifth-year seniors had added another layer. Within that layer lies Kentucky's golden ticket to true championship contention: Mark Mitchell.
The Wildcats already have the tools to become a late-season dark horse in the SEC, but adding an All-SEC forward to that group in the form of Mitchell would raise Kentucky's ceiling as high as it'll go. He'd click in perfectly with Pope's current starting lineup; at the three-spot between Alex Wilkins and Milan Momcilovic, the Cats would have another one of the best scorers in the conference.
Not only did Mitchell average 18.2 points, 5.2 boards and 3.6 assists last year with Missouri (shooting nearly 40% from three-point range), but he filled it up in both of the Tigers' two contests against Kentucky.
Mitchell Was the Wildcats' Kryptonite Last Season
When Missouri won at Rupp Arena in January, Mitchell came up with 21 points against a Wildcats defense that simply had no answer for him. Later in the season in the SEC Tournament, even as Kentucky got revenge, Mitchell posted a ridiculous 32 points, and was a perfect 2-2 from distance.
As HS Top Recruits pointed out with Mitchell's highlight reel on X, whichever team ultimately lands him will be thrilled. The Big Blue Nation should be crossing their fingers that said team is in Lexington.

Kentucky's Final Piece for Championship Contention is Worth an NIL Bag
None of this is to say that the current makeup of the 2026-27 Wildcats can't compete for a national title, but it's not controversial to say that Kentucky aren't currently favored anywhere. In fact, ESPN just dropped a preseason top 25 that saw the Wildcats barely sneak into the ranking.
That's probably more a faulty ranking than anything else, but it also lends evidence to the claim that Kentucky could use a final piece. There are more than a few pieces worthy of the Wildcats' radar, but Mitchell looks like the most surefire fit of the bunch.
Either way, we'll have to see a decision come to a head soon. As Mark Pope and his staff mull Kentucky's portal options, a player like Mitchell is one well worth going all-in on.
Especially after how short Kentucky fell last season, the pressure for a competitive response is boiling at its highest point under Pope. He's had a landmark offseason already, and adding Mitchell would fully bring his efforts over the top.
