Mark Pope and John Calipari have already become familiar with dueling on the hardwood. Since Pope took Calipari's long-term spot in Lexington, the two head coaches, old and new, have split matchups between Kentucky and Arkansas. Both schools have a win, with the newfound rivalry set to return to Rupp Arena this coming season in undoubtedly tense fashion.

Yet, their consistent clashes (a harsh word for two people quite cordial with one another) have begun to transcend to the recruiting trail, where both the Wildcats and the Razorbacks are trying to make a move on four-star big man Caleb Ourigou in the 2027 class.

As a decision draws near, per Joe Tipton, Pope and Calipari race not only against one another for Ourigou's services, but against UConn and BYU as well. It's a big-name battle of the best for this top 35 recruit.

Coach Cal is Running Away With Caleb Ourigou

And, even though nothing official has been said by Ourigou or his camp just yet, it appears that Coach Cal may be running away with this one in advance. Kentucky needs a little momentum on the recruiting trail, and quickly.

The main indicator of this foregone conclusion is the Arkansas-favored crystal ball prediction currently sitting in the 247Sports files for Ourigou. Now, Kentucky fans know better than just about anybody that something like that can change in an instant - just see the Nikola Kusturica debacle - but it's still fair to say that the Cats' outlook here is less than favorable thus far.

Currently, the Wildcats sit with five-star forward Ryan Hampton in the same class, who marked Pope's first ever high school recruit of that status. But with Hampton holding down scoring on the wing, bringing in a big like Ourigou would be an undeniable assist in advance.

Athleticism and physicalty strive in the SEC, and this is a prospect that boasts both in spades.

Ourigou is Built for the SEC

Coming in at 6-foot-10, 240 lbs, Ourigou's frame is described as "long, strong, and athletic" by 247Sports' Adam Finkelstein. "He can elevate with power to finish above the basket, come up with catches on the move, and show some dexterity at the rim," Finkelstein added. "He's also a reliable presence on the glass and capable post threat if he can get deep position."

Basically, he can do it all. Give Ourigou some time in a college weight room prior to his debut, too, and you've got one of the most promising bigs in the class on paper, no matter where he ends up.

At this point, unless Kentucky finds a way to pick up the slack in this regard, the Big Blue Nation may be better off hoping that he just ends up outside of the SEC. If you're not landing a tank like this, the next worst thing is immediately having to play him.

The Cats are already in that position this season with Marcus Spears Jr. and Texas - let's hope we don't have a repeat in 2027-28 with Caleb Ourigou.
