Mark Pope and Kentucky's quest for 5-star wing Ryan Hampton is heating up fast

Mark Pope may be circling five-star Ryan Hampton to meet Kentucky's ongoing and particularly loud need on the wing.

While things have been eerily silent on the blue and white front, the Big Blue Nation can rest assured that Coach Pope and his staff are still on active pursuit of an impactful addition on the wing - at least, they are for the time being.

Star transfer (and current NBA Draft hopeful) Milan Momcilovic still seems to lead that pack for Kentucky, but not far behind him is 2027 five-star forward Ryan Hampton. In fact, if Hampton decides to reclassify to the coming season, I’m not sure he’ll be behind Momcilovic at all.

And, according to Aaron Torres, such a move is firmly in the cards, if not outright likely to happen. That aforementioned pursuit is heating up fast.

“Yes, I do believe 2027 five-star Ryan Hampton will reclassify,” said Torres, also expressing a similar sentiment to many fans: Kentucky needs another wing. The task is clear, and targets are outlined plainly on the board. It's time for the Cats' staff to pull this thing off.

Kentucky's Need For a Wing

Kentucky has both Kam Williams and Braydon Hawthorne in rotation on the wing already, but Mark Pope's tireless pursuit of No. 1 overall player Tyran Stokes signaled to the Big Blue Nation that the Wildcats were dissatisfied without a top dog (top Cat?) at the small forward spot.

That's why Momcilovic and Hampton are in the conversation at all and, as far as I can tell, Pope is doing all he can to end up with one of them. Even if Hampton doesn't share the same invaluable collegaite experience as Momcilovic, the five-star has a skillset all his own.

Per Caden Ferguson on X, Hampton just posted a 28-point, 13-rebound performance at Nike's EYBL event amidst conversations about his recruitment and hoped-for reclass. With LSU and SMU heavily involved alongside Kentucky, the smoke is more than rising with the shifty forward.

Hampton moves extremely well for his size, with a lengthy, if not thin, frame and a penchant for shot-creating. His ability to rebound the ball is a standout aspect of his game, too; that hustle bodes well for a move to the SEC, regardless of whether or not he ends up in Lexington.

But by all means, Cats fans should be thrilled if he does.

A Thrilling Possibility

Hampton, clicking in on either side of Alex Wilkins and Ousmane N'Diaye, would solidify Kentucky's projected started lineup as one of the most versatile in the league. 1-4 can score pretty much anywhere, and returning Malachi Moreno (fingers crossed) to that bunch makes the Wildcats a perennial conference competitor, to say the least.

The same could likely be said of adding Momcilovic, but as Kentucky waits around on his draft decision, it doesn't hurt to speculate what an alternative could look like.

Hampton has the physical tools and early signs of development to more than substantiate a reclass to 2026-27. If that's the case, I wouldn't be surprised to see Kentucky dive head-first into the mix with Hampton.

With a stash of NIL funds leftover from the aforementioned Stokes' recruitment, Kentucky could make a one-of-a-kind offer that'd be hard for anyone to refuse. I don't want to get ahead of myself here, but the staff has options to fill this team's need on the wing, and Hampton is one of, if not the most likely option remaining therein.
