Mark Pope and Kentucky have no choice but to pay Milan Momcilovic's massive rumored price tag

If Mark Pope wants to land his biggest pickup of the offseason, Kentucky must be comfortable paying top-dollar.

Mark Pope and Kentucky have had a good, sensible offseason by most measures. The Cats' head coach has gone out of his way to meet needs proposed by the shortcomings of last season's 14-loss roster. Point guards? Check. Depth 1-5? Also check.

Yet, the outstanding need for a go-to scoring option - meant initially to be filled by No. 1 overall recruit Tyran Stokes - remains that way. Without a guy on the wing who can get a bucket at will, this good, sensible Kentucky team remains on the outside of being a great, nationally competitive team.

Milan Momcilovic, since whispers of his return to college from the NBA Draft have begun circulating, Kentucky fans have circled the star transfer wing as the solution to that problem. And given Pope's public involvement, it's not as far out of the question as some may have initially assumed.

Per Isaac Trotter and 247Sports, such an addition is likely to come at a dastardly cost. "It's hard to leave $6 million on the table, and I think he would probably get in that ballpark..." said Trotter.

Paying the Big Blue Bucks

Talk about sticker shock, BBN. But that isn't to say that Kentucky doesn't have the funds for this sort of team-changing transaction; the set-aside bill for the aforementioned Stokes was rumored to be in the same sort of financial range.

And given the state of the rest of Kentucky's roster - a well-structured, mostly complete one - Momcilovic may be the final piece needed to put this thing completely together. Now, that's assuming Malachi Moreno's return from draft consideration, but we have to take this thing one beat at a time.

A Bluegrass Recruiting Brawl

If Momcilovic does return to college, reports suggest that Kentucky and Louisville are set to be the main contenders. I'd like to suggest that, since the Cards' roster is already packed and paid for, Kentucky would have the advantage here.

But if Pat Kelsey has made anything clear this offseason, it's that he isn't afraid to cut a gnarly check. In that case, it's a bidding war that Kentucky can't afford to lose by any stretch; whether $6 million or even more, as ludicrous as that sounds (and is).

Through my lens, Momcilovic is a perfect fit for Pope's offensive style (he said as much himself) and would be the kind of big recruiting win that signals the Wildcats' head coach is trending in the right direction in his third year.

With the draft decision deadline less than one week away now, on May 27, it shouldn't be long before we know which way Momcilovic is trending toward. Hold your breath a little bit longer, BBN, this roster is closer than ever to being fully complete.
