Mark Mitchell committing to Kentucky last week felt like a massive win by itself, but his decision was only part of the process. As a fifth-year senior that the SEC is actively trying to bar from playing, Mitchell's eligibility remained up in the air even after being granted an injunction in court. Yet, according to a new report, Mitchell's case is far stronger than most.
Per Ben Roberts and the Lexington Herald-Leader, an SEC spokesman directly indicated that Mitchell's situation doesn't rule him ineligible under the conference's new policy. That reality would immediately cement the Cats as an elite contender this season.
That new policy, announced by the league on Tuesday, stated that SEC schools could not roster any players who had declared for the NBA draft, signed a deal with an NBA/G League team, or were listed on an NBA or G League roster.
For those keeping track of the story, Mitchell doesn't meet any of those limiting criteria, as Tristan Pharis went on to lay out on X.

Most importantly, Mitchell never signed a contract of any kind on the next level. Even given his late entry into the transfer portal, the five-star transfer's eligibility appears as sound as it could be.
All of the fifth-year senior rulings and court cases are impossible to fully track, but luckily for Kentucky, the guy Mark Pope got is among the simplest situations of them all. He's also arguably the best player that entered the portal as a part of this whole mess.
Kentucky may have landed the best available player in Mitchell
Mitchell was dubbed a five-star and listed at the No. 6 player in the portal by 247Sports, just four spots behind fellow Wildcat Milan Momcilovic. His pledge to Kentucky gave Coach Pope the best class in the entire portal, ahead of St. John's, Louisville, Tennessee, and Texas.
You just can't overstate how huge this All-SEC addition was for Pope. After a controversial offseason full of question marks, Kentucky has panned out with one of the best preseason rosters in all of college basketball.
Mitchell joining was one thing, but him now appearing eligible from every angle is the cherry on top. The Big Blue Nation can (almost) officially rejoice at his commitment, and it shouldn't be long now before Mitchell touches down in Lexington and joins the squad ahead of this fall.
No matter how badly the conference commissioners may want it to fall through, Mark Mitchell is a Wildcat. Him joining this team makes Mark Pope's outlook at Rupp Arena appear dangerously close to banner-hanging potential.
