Jasper Johnson has officially ended his frustrating time in Lexington before it really even started. The 2 guard just did not have the experience needed to play the point, and for whatever reason, that is where Mark Pope decided to play him. I don't blame the kid, but KY til I die lasted only one season.
It all stated with a rant from his uncle, Kentucky football legend Derrick Johnson who posted:
"I’m disgusted and appalled by the way some of our 'fans' talk about these kids...These last four months—what I thought would be an exciting time watching my nephew chase his dreams—have turned into one of the most disappointing experiences I’ve ever seen."
And he is right fans were brutal, but to be fair the play from Johnson was just as bad.
Jasper Johnson never found his footing with Kentucky basketball
When Jasper signed, he was an offensive player in the realm of Rob Dillingham, someone who is smaller but quick with the ball and is a volume shooter. The coaching staff lost Acaden Lewis to Villanova and saw Jaland Lowe go down with a shoulder injury. That forced them to try playing Jasper at the point.
It didn't work.
Jasper struggled with physicality, and his stats reflect a player who never got comfortable, 4 points in 12 minutes per game. And he only saw double-digit minutes 5 times, with none of those games coming after January 24th. He never got the run he needed to get comfortable because he was played in a position that just didn't make sense any time he got in the game.
When he did get in against Iowa State, he fell down bringing the ball up the court and just couldn't handle the physicality of the game. But again, part of that is on the coach who decided to try to force him to play that role.
After that loss, he said, "I'm not really thinking about it right now... knowing that our season is over and I'm just taking it all in, just talking to all of my friends on the team... but not really thinking too far right now."
He didn't take a long time to think about it with today's announcement.
He opened his commitment with a KY Til I Die slogan printed on his shirt; he made a brand, but now he is heading to the exit after just 1 season.
