The Kentucky Wildcats opened the Round of 32 looking like a team ready to crush some March Madness dreams, building a dominant 18-6 lead over Iowa State. But the moment Mark Pope turned to his bench, the game completely flipped on its head, like it has all season long. After a brutal avalanche of turnovers transformed a potential blowout into an embarrassing collapse, Kentucky is wondering where they go from here.
In just two agonizing minutes, a game the Wildcats should have been controlling by 20 points was suddenly tightened to 20-18. From that moment on, Kentucky didn't just lose their grip on the game; they handed it directly to the Cyclones.
Jasper Johnson's struggles continue
It is a hard truth, but Denzel Aberdeen simply cannot play 40 minutes against a defense of this caliber and remain as effective as he normally is. However, a tired Denzel is proving to be vastly superior to a fresh Jasper Johnson right now. It just is what it is.
Johnson is just not physical enough for this level of tournament intensity. He picked up a quick foul and then immediately turned the ball over by simply falling down while bringing it up the court. I love Jasper, and he possesses a massive amount of long-term potential, but you absolutely cannot play him in these high-stakes moments when he is this disconnected from the flow of the game.
Turnovers and fouls gifted Iowa State the game
During the 11-0 run that allowed the Cyclones to tie the game in the first half, Iowa State was shooting a miserable 0-for-8 from deep and just 6-for-18 from the floor overall.
So, how did they manage to stay in it? Kentucky gifted it to them.
The Wildcats committed a staggering five turnovers in a three-minute span, entirely fueling Iowa State's fast break. When Kentucky wasn't throwing the ball away, they were hacking. With 8:00 left in the first half, Iowa State was already 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. Kentucky hadn't even attempted a single shot from the charity stripe.
An embarrassing end to a frustrating year
Things would only get exponentially worse for Kentucky as the second half dragged on. With 11 minutes remaining, Iowa State extended its lead to 11 points and simply kept pouring it on a lifeless Wildcats squad.
It was flat-out embarrassing. Kentucky racked up 20 turnovers, and a sickening amount of them were unforced errors, careless passes thrown out of bounds or directly into the chest of an Iowa State defender.
Once the score hit 20-10 in favor of Kentucky early in the first half, the Cats were subsequently outscored 72-43. Iowa State almost doubled them up for the remainder of the contest. It was an absolutely embarrassing performance to cap off what has been a deeply frustrating season in Lexington.
