Kentucky's roster receives national praise as summer workouts officially kick off

After a long offseason, Kentucky Basketball is enjoying some time in the limelight as praise flows in for Mark Pope's team.

Kentucky has suffered a long offseason full of national criticism and rumors coming in from all sides. It wasn't until Mark Pope turned things around on the recruiting front that people cut him some slack, but as summer workouts start to ramp up, onlookers are finally changing their tune on the Cats.

Most recently, Aaron Torres took to Pope's defense on his podcast, outright gushing about what Coach Pope and his staff have put together so far.

"Essentially everyone recruited Alex Wilkins when he went into the portal, that's all you need to know," said Torres of the Furman transfer guard. But before even touching on Wilkins, Torres focused on the Wildcats' floor general: Zoom Diallo.

"He is going to be better than a lot of people realize," said Torres of Diallo, "a lot of people just didn't watch him." Torres went on to note that, in spite of Diallo playing for a subpar Washington team, his best basketball came when it mattered most late in the year.

Oh, and of course, Milan Momcilovic is a stud. But you don't have to hear that from me or anyone else to look at a 48% three-point shooter and draw that conclusion. He's a one-of-one asset that changed this Kentucky team in the best way.

Now, barring a knockout late addition - which isn't completely out of the question - we've got the bulk of our 2026-27 Kentucky team. I, along with Torres, believe this group has the potential to surprise a lot of people.

Kentucky Can Surprise the Nation

That isn't to suggest that Mark Pope's third-year roster will enter the season as any kind of unranked underdog; while it's hard to be exactly sure, it's hard to imagine this Kentucky team anywhere beyond the top 20, or even top 15. We've got a good group, BBN.

But with high-profile misses on other players and a few "wait and see" pickups in the mix, Kentucky isn't expected to contend at the absolute highest level. At least, they aren't right out of the gate.

But with the aforementioned trio on the floor, as well as the returning Malachi Moreno and a guy like Ousmane N'Diaye, who has an invisible ceiling, the sky truly is the limit. If Kentucky can score at will like the best of Coach Pope's offenses, this group could get scary fast.

We'll have to hope summer practices are going to plan and that, in them, players find a way to stay healthy. Let's just get to November at full strength and see what a wholly realized Pope vision can do.
