Mark Pope, Kentucky getting mixed signals in hot pursuit of Nikola Kusturica

A removed crystal ball, the “clear favorite,”… what’s going on with Nikola Kusturica?

Not even two days ago, Mark Pope appeared to be on the brink of landing yet another top-tier prospect. International star forward Nikola Kusturica was given a crystal ball to Kentucky by the generally reliable Travis Branham, and the Big Blue Nation dropped the disco ball.

And then, in an unceremonious, even ominous post, Branham removed it. No prediction exists now for Kusturica and, as of now, the race against other schools appears very much still on. What gives?

This sudden change of pace is especially jarring given that Jeff Goodman’s seeming confirmation that the Cats led this recruitment, just yesterday on The Field of 68, saying “...Kentucky is the clear favorite at this point."

And while onlookers may be quick to claim Pope “whiffed” on this one, Branham shut that down himself on X:

Whatever is going on behind the scenes, much like the Rob Wright scenario from earlier this offseason, it’s too complicated to qualify that way. The majority of this situation has yet to unfold.

Nikola Kusturica's Recruitment is Still Unfolding

While Kentucky is very much still in hot pursuit here (as far as anyone knows), could we really have expected it to be this easy? Even given Pope's streak on the recruiting trail as of late, this is a projected lottery pick two years from now that has really only just begun entertaining the collegiate route.

With the likes of Gonzaga, UCLA, and Michigan, the defending national champions, all involved, this was bound to get a little messy. At just 17 years old, Kusturica is likely looking for more than a paycheck; ahead of the 2028 NBA Draft, he's a guy sensibly trending toward a two-year deal.

And at just 17 years old, he's got the entire college basketball world on notice right now. Kusturica's 20-point average overseas, spurred by a ridiculous feel for the offensive side of the ball, has made him a priority recruit well ahead of his anticipated collegiate peak.

Kentucky's Outlook

As far as the Wildcats go, Kentucky has a good team with or without Kusturica. Yet, I can't help but feel like he's about the best possible final piece on the market.

He'd have a case to start from the get-go, and should easily catapult this (most likely) already ranked Cats team into top 10, or even top five, territory. Kusturica is that good already.

But like priority recruits Tyran Stokes, the aforementioned Rob Wright, and Donnie Freeman before him, Big Blue Nation will simply have to trust the process in the meantime as Pope makes his pitch. Regardless, our head coach has earned enough good grace lately that I'd like to think he's got a little trust from the fanbase right now.

I'd like to think that... but I also know what Cats fans expect. We'll see how it goes.
