Kentucky's La Familia alumni team can't catch a break ahead of feud with The Ville

The hits and bad news just keep coming for Kentucky's La Familia alumni team this summer.

The Basketball Tournament's (TBT) summer antics have become a favorite pastime of the Big Blue Nation's throughout the last few summers. The alumni league always seems to land at the exact right time; when news slows for current collegiate programs, players of the past hit the scene and, especially in Lexington, move the needle for basketball fans in their annual wait.

But this season, things are quickly coming apart at the seams for Kentucky's La Familia squad. After losing Kerr Kriisa as a result of his arrest, the team has now suffered a second blow in the form of big man Reid Travis' dissent. This is the second time in three years that Travis has had to back out of TBT competition, with the first being due to "unforeseen professional obligations" back in 2024.

We just can't catch a break right now, Cats fans. La Familia's official X account addressed the absence of Travis on the team's website (which BBN was quick to notice) with a sorrowful statement. Take a look:

Shortly after this news broke, KSR reported that it's a back injury that will prevent Travis from competing with La Familia. It's certainly worrying that his departure from the roster comes so close to the beginning of the Wildcats' three-game series with Louisville's The Ville this weekend.

A Brutal Last-Second Loss for La Familia

The post itself notes that practice had already begun on Monday. Cutting it close, to say the absolute least.

Still, in spite of this brutal last-second loss, La Familia remains confident in the roster at hand and are "excited to compete in TBT." I know the blue and white faithful are showing out for game one at Memorial Coliseum either way, but the Cardinals coming to visit haven't had similar roster issues.

In fact, having just issued their own announcement for the return of Montrezl Harrell, The Ville appear more capable than ever before. The timing truly could not be worse for our battered bunch of former Cats.

But on top of seeing Willie Cauley-Stein battle with Harrell once more (possibly for the last time), this La Familia team may have enough upside yet to catch The Ville off guard.

Enough Upside to Surprise The Ville

To be clear, I still unfortunately believe that Kentucky are kind of the underdogs entering this series. Harrell, paired with Trey Lewis and Russ Smith, among others, form a formidable and full squad that will give La Familia all they can handle.

But in recent pickup Quade Green, the Wildcats got a whole lot younger. And on top of Green, returners like the aforementioned Cauley-Stein, as well as Kahlil Whitney and DeAndre Liggins, (Archie Goodwin will unfortunately miss game one also) provide enough cohesion to raise the floor of La Familia. I don't think this team is getting blown out.

Even so, their ultimate success will likely come down to lesser known snags like Chris Coffey and Sean McNeil; just how far can guys like those elevate the bones of a Kentucky roster that beat Louisville two years ago in this very same league?

All I'm asking is for a series win. No matter how you get it, the BBN could use a little extra horsepower this summer over Louisville fans - just as it goes in every other sport, Cats fans won't let them forget another defeat if La Familia can manage it.
