Kentucky recruiting up for a 5-star reclassification means another Wildcats waiting game

Once again, the Big Blue Nation are left tapping their feet as Mark Pope and Kentucky try to finalize this roster with a bang in the shadows.

The Big Blue Nation are no strangers to the waiting game. Cats fans waiting on Tyran Stokes' decision for nearly a year, and have experienced the same struggle in multiple week-long bouts this offseason as Mark Pope worked to construct his third-year roster mostly out of the limelight.

Although, that doesn't make the process any less grueling. Now, with money to spend and the apparent desire to fill in the starting three-spot, that very process seems to have kicked in once more. Kentucky is in on both Milan Momcolivoc, a star transfer, and Ryan Hampton, a five-star reclass candidate. In the case of both, the Wildcats are set to face a prolonged wait.

Per Jacob Polacheck, Kentucky is currently in the race for Hampton alongisde SMU, LSU, Texas, and others. Hampton's father spoke with KSR and, after noting that NIL will indeed be a factor in his decision, seemed to suggest that the blue and white offer is the biggest on the table.

"Think about it."

Playing the Waiting Game

Hampton is often listed as either a shooting guard or small forward, but his length 6-foot-6 frame, as well as Kentucky having already secured a scoring guard in Alex Wilkins, seems to suggest that he'd be pulled to Lexington to play the three.

And given the expensive nature of both a five-star recruit and the No. 2 transfer in the nation (Momcilovic), it'll likely come down to one or the other for Kentucky.

The earliest this momentum could settle in either direction would be the end of this month, when NBA Draftees must either stay in the event or return to college on May 27. The blue smoke has certainly been rising around Momcilovic's possible consideration of Kentucky, but given the staff's public pursuit of Hampton, it seems like a deal that's far from done.

Yet again, the Cats find themselves pacing the room as two recruits prepare to consider their undoubtedly seismic offers. We're officially in "waiting game" territory.

Two Ideal Fits

What's more, and perhaps comforting? Through my eyes (take that as you will), both Hampton and Momcilovic would click into Kentucky's current lineup smoothly, assuming they both start.

Momcilovic is a better pure shooter and has a breadth of experience on the collegiate level, but Hampton, as a raw prospect, looks to have a higher overall ceiling on both sides of the ball. I believe Momcilovic is built for Coach Pope's offense, but I also am sure that Hampton is plenty good enough to class-up and make an immediate impact.

It's a win-win in my eyes, with the only catch being that Kentucky needs to come home with one of these guys. Miss on both, and we go from "who do we want" to "what on earth do we do" very quickly.
