Mitch Barnhart was never particularly popular at Kentucky; at least, he hasn't been in recent memory. Solid hires were scattered between misfires and controveries almost constantly over his tenure. In the last few years specifically, much of the allotted grace around Barnhart seemed to expire.
Kentucky fans, of any sport, began openly asking for change. Whether or not Barnhart's retirement earlier this year had anything to do with that pressure is unclear, but now, the hunt is officially on for a new name to take his spot.
In a release from Kentucky Athletics, the process for finding Barnhart's replacement at the athletic director position was given new light for those on the outside looking in. Following the backlash to Barnhart's initially proposed, cushy behind the scenes position, this sort of transparency is more than welcome.
In short, The University of Kentucky wants to change with the landscape of college athletics, not work against it. That's a good start.
Changing With the Times
“College athletics is always changing, but that change now is occurring more rapidly and with greater financial impacts than ever before,” UK President Eli Capilouto said, upon the news that he'll begin speaking with candidates for the job over the next few weeks.

“The leadership role must change and adapt as well. Putting the success of our students first remains a priority. Winning championships remains critically important — but, so too, is the financial and commercial acumen to generate more revenue, manage expenses more tightly and align even more with our institutional mission to advance the state," he contined.
Of course, Cats fans are only really worried about the former stipulation; the big blue bluegrass wants championships. But to do that, to an extent, NIL relations have to be handled properly, and innovative ways to generate revenue for athletics must be, well, innovated.
This is a new frontier for blue and white athletics, but it has the potential to change every sport for the better.
Changing Athletics For the Better
With Barnhart firmly pushed out of the minds of Cats fans as he prepares to leave this summer, it's only a matter of time before possibilities start to arise and interviews begin to take place.
Kentucky fans have already spent a portion of this particularly wild offseason theorizing about the athletic director position and pinning possible names ahead of the actual search beginning.
On top of both basketball and football offering recruiting news at this time, as well as baseball still (technically) being alive, Kentucky Athletics is as busy as they've been in years. Above it all, hiring someone who will call the shots across the board may be the most important development of all.
