The rivalry is back in a big way, and it arrives early in the season with major stakes. Kentucky travels to the KFC Yum! Center tomorrow night for a nationally televised showdown against Louisville. The smack talk has been flowing, and tomorrow night the basketball will be popping.
We take a look at each roster position and break down who has the advantage. Here’s the full position-by-position edge breakdown for the biggest rivalry game in the Bluegrass.
Kentucky vs. Louisville: The matchups
Point Guard: Mikel Brown Jr. vs. Jaland Lowe
- Brown is averaging nearly eight assists and has total command of Louisville’s offense. Lowe is skilled but still limited by a heavy brace and reduced minutes.
- Advantage: Louisville
Shooting Guard: Otega Oweh vs. Ryan Conwell
- Oweh is the preseason SEC Player of the Year and a matchup-breaker. Conwell is excellent, but this leans clearly toward Kentucky.
- Advantage: Kentucky
Small Forward: Isaac McKneely vs. Collin Chandler
- McKneely is a dangerous sniper who can flip a game with two quick threes. Chandler has improved rapidly off the ball and is more versatile, making this effectively a stalemate.
- Advantage: Push
Power Forward: Khani Rooths vs. Mo Dioubate
- Rooths is poised for a breakout year, while Dioubate brings experience, defense, and toughness. Slight edge to the more proven player.
- Advantage: Kentucky
Center: Sanada Fru vs. Brandon Garrison
- Two talented, inconsistent bigs who flash brilliance but can disappear.
- Advantage: Push
Bench
- Kentucky’s depth is overwhelming, with waves of contributors who can swing stretches of games. Louisville’s bench is strong but thinner.
- Advantage: Kentucky
Coaching: Pat Kelsey vs. Mark Pope
- Two excellent tacticians. Pope won last year’s battle, so he holds the narrow edge entering this one.
- Advantage: Kentucky
Overall
Kentucky has more depth, more high-end scoring, and more ways to win. Louisville’s path is Mikel Brown Jr. having a signature night, and he’s talented enough to do it, but Kentucky enters as the more complete team.
Don’t miss this one.
It has all the makings of a November classic.
