Kentucky is battling Will Stein's former school for the commitment of a 2028 quarterback

Will Stein has had Kentucky in some outrageous recruiting battles since his hiring, even managing to land the No. 2 quarterback in the 2027 class in Jake Nawrot. Now, Coach Stein has Kentucky on the front lines once again as, per Hayes Fawcett, the Wildcats are in three-star quarterback Trey Wright's final five. To land him, Stein will have to go through his former school.

Stein essentially made his name with Oregon, emerging as a QB guru and one of the best play-callers in the country. Denver Broncos passer Bo Nix, among others, owes his collegiate development in large part to Stein's coaching. His run with the Ducks is what got him to Lexington in the first place.

Now, for the first time since leaving the Ducks, he's going head-to-head with them for a recruit. But it isn't just Oregon that Kentucky has to worry about. Wright is a rising name in the 2028 class, evidenced by the elite net he's cast with the programs that still remain.

Kentucky Has Elite Recruiting Competition for Trey Wright

Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans are also heavily involved, joined out west by the Arizona Wildcats in pursuit of the Texas QB. SMU is also in the picture, making their big as the only home-state school left in the picture for Wright.

On the surface, Kentucky looks like the obvious outlier here. You've got a first-year head coach competing with teams that are either close to home, boast College Football Playoff-level experience, or both.

However, Stein's past means he simply can't be counted out. Kenny Minchey and the aforementioned Nawrot are two prime examples that Stein has the ability to mix it up for top QBs, and Wright's recruitment is no different.

Kentucky may not be the favorite here, but they've made it this far for a reason.

Will Stein Always Has a Shot to Land QBs

Wright, out of Frisco Lone Star, was described as a "Dynamic, highly productive QB who makes plays in structured and improvised environments alike" by 247Sports' Gabe Brooks. He's a spry, mobile athlete who also played basketball, taking a "point guard approach" under center.

It's easy to see why Stein would want to take a swing at this guy, and thus, Kentucky is in the picture. After watching Mark Stoops scramble to land passers in his final few years in Lexington, it's certainly a jarring change of pace to see the Wildcats pushing the envelope like this.

Yet that's exactly what Stein was brought here to do. Solid recruiting elsewhere aside, this position is his specific specialty; the BBN can expect Kentucky to continue to be involved with limelight names at QB.

Regarding Wright specifically, he's set to announce his commitment tomorrow, Aug. 15. We'll have that news when it breaks, but Stein is on a certified heater regardless of how it pans out.
