Kentucky Basketball is, by all conceivable measures, the standard. The Big Blue Nation essentially ran John Calipari out of town as a result of his consistently coming short of that standard of success, and Mark Pope has since been under fire by fans watching that very same thing with intense closeness.

Still, in spite of the program's more recent struggles - especially regarding the postseason - Kentucky still leads in all-time wins in the history of men's college basketball. The Cats' number, now 2,444, has long been uncontested. But that could change soon, as the second-most team is on the rise.

According to a graphic posted by FOX College Hoops on X, Kansas is now only six wins behind the Wildcats, with 2,438. North Carolina comes in third, although a bit further back at 2,419. The Jayhawks are the most immediate threat.

And the two blue-blooded leaders will play this year in the Champions Classic. Something has to give and, one way or another, one of the two programs racing for gold will get an early advantage in a pivotal season.

An Early Advantage Either Way

Of course, one Kansas win won't bury Kentucky, but a six-win gap is more than doable in one season, and a direct loss to Kansas is objectively the worst possibility for a Kentucky team trying to hang on to their lead.

To make matters worse, Bill Self and the Jayhawks are led by No. 1 overall recruit Tyran Stokes, who spurned Kentucky in favor of Kansas after Coach Pope essentially put his entire offseason's stake on the prospect.

A Crucial Champion's Classic

The energy, and bitterness, will be at a boiling point when the two teams meet this fall. As each try and finalize their rosters, with Kentucky specifically working to make up for the loss of Stokes, it may go down as the most important Champions Classic duel in years.

At least, as far as Pope's time at Kentucky goes, as well as the team's all-time win record.

It's a chance for the Cats to reinstate their authority in spite of those aforementioned struggles as of late, and for Pope specifically to recover from last year's blowout loss in the event to Tom Izzo and Michigan State.

A battle with Tyran Stokes and Kansas has both nightmare and dream potential for Kentucky. No matter how unfortunate the worst outcome may be, the BBN shouldn't shy away from top-shelf competition such as this.

After all, how did the Wildcats get to the top in the first place? It was by winning these games. Coach Pope and his third-year team must face the music.
