It's safe to say that Kentucky Basketball hasn't had the best of luck when it comes to the ACC-SEC Challenge. In its three-year existence, the Cats are just 1-2, with back-to-back losses to Clemson and North Carolina defining what has been an underwhelming run for Kentucky so far. Kentucky run away from Miami in Rupp Arena, but that's been nearly three years ago now. This year, Mark Pope's squad will hit the road in search of a rebound in the competition.

The schedule for the 2026-2027 ACC-SEC Challenge has been set, and Kentucky will be traveling to John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia, to take on the Cavaliers.

These two teams are right next door to each other but, oddly enough, haven't played in a hot minute.

The Virginia Cavaliers Await

The last time the Cats and Cavaliers took the court was in 2002, when Virginia knocked off Kentucky 75-61 in the Maui Invitational. Jules Camara, Marquis Estill, and Keith Bogans all had 12 points in the defeat. Before that, the two teams hadn't clashed since Kentucky swept a home-and-home series with Virginia in 1965 and 1966. That's way, way, way back.

That will make it 60 years since the Wildcats have taken the floor as the away team in Charlottesville. According to BigBlueHistory.net, Kentucky is 6-3 all-time against Virginia. Of every possible matchup in the challenge, this may have been one of the most unique outcomes for Kentucky.

Virginia, led by first-year head coach Ryan Odom, made it all the way to the ACC title game and, as a three-seed, fell by single-digits to the Tennessee Volunteers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. While the Cavs aren't common on many preseason rankings, they'll be far from a slouch when the Wildcats visit, especially on their home floor.

Jon Rothstein posted a full list of all the matchups, Kentucky included, on X:

The SEC has won two of the three years that the challenge has taken place. Overall, SEC teams are 30-16 in the challenge. I'll say it again: The best conference in college basketball.

For Kentucky, a trip to Virginia will be a chance to get a big road win over a program that, regardless of their expected ranking, is surging back into the national limelight. It'll be a classic kind of gritty, hit-for-hit non-conference road game.

Kentucky and Virginia will play on the second day of the event, on Wednesday, December 2. A time has yet to be announced, but we'll let you know when it breaks. You know the drill, Cats fans.
