Once a Cardinal, not always a Cardinal, am I right? First, it was Rick Pitino coming back to Rupp Arena in the blue and white last fall, spurning Louisville with his post-Bluegrass choice of public allegiance. Then, Will Stein, a former Cardinals quarterback, renounced any red and white remaining in him in favor of the blue and white. It doesn't end there, somehow.
Now, according to BBN Tonight, assistant general manager for Kentucky Football, Pete Nochta, will step up into the interim role after the sudden departure of Pat Biondo. Nochta came to Lexington directly from Louisville upon Stein's hiring, and now, he'll step into the limelight on Stein's staff.
Nochta spent twelve years on the Cardinals staff in a variety of roles, ultimately transitioning into the director of recruiting for Louisville as Jeff Brohm's program slowly climbed into the favor of the national eye.

In the modern age of college football, the general manager position has taken on an importance like never before. Between NIL negotations and the neverending task of roster construction, a head coach has truly never been more out of his means in trying to do it alone.
Kentucky needed a guy when Biondo left and, for the time, Nochta is the man.
Pete Nochta is the Man for Kentucky Football... For Now
Biondo stepping down, which was announced in a confusing change of pace for the program just yesterday, left Kentucky's front office in general disarray. None of Stein's recruiting momentum slowed down for the moment, but all the same, a massive gap was left in Biondo's overseer position.
Nochta, having been working in-house for a few months now, feels like the most reliable immediate option possible. Even given his previous run with the birds down the road, this is a guy with more than a decade of experience in the exact place that Kentucky needs him.
And with fall camp, and really the season, so close now, it'd be no surprise to see Nochta ride this position out through the season and see how things pan out. Who knows if this was initially in the cards for Nochta, but he's got the resume and comfortability with the current staff to make this thing work in a pinch.
Much like Stein's relatively late hiring in December, it's just about putting the pieces together as best as Kentucky possibly can at this point. The Cats have a more than workable squad in Stein's first season and, even with this change in the front office, the BBN has a reason to be positive about the 2026-27 outlook.
Also, it's another reason to poke fun at Cardinals fans. Win-win.
