Bret Bielema's random shot at the SEC should give Kentucky Football fans a good laugh

The Big Blue Nation are pretty well used to bickering with other SEC fanbases at this point. It’s extremely rare that the rest of the college sports world gives us a reason to along with the likes of Tennessee, Alabama, or Florida fans. Yet, Bret Bielema has come along and done just that. Never count out the Big Ten, I guess?

The Illinois Fighting Illini head coach, per On3, just threw a random stray at the SEC in the middle of July during Big Ten Media Days. "They want to live in 2005 forever," Bielema said, calling back to a more shallow era of college football in which the SEC was a more dominant mainstay than they are even now.

And, to a point, Bielema has recent history on his side. The Big Ten has been the conference of the national champion three years in a row now; was Illinois one of those teams in any given year? No, but that's every so slightly besides the point.

The real point is multi-layered: Not only does the SEC have a historical claim to greatness on the college level of football (a fact Kentucky fans are unfortunately familiar with), but Bielema's own past with the conference is the sort that would absolutely produce a coach who isn't entirely fond of the league.

Bielema's Revealing Coaching History in the SEC

I'm not going to knock Bielema's coaching ability, especially not know. The man has led Illinois to two straight bowl wins and has that school, one not entirely known for their football team, in a good spot. But you don't have to go all that far back - certainly not to 2005 - to uncover a telling metric.

Bielema coached at Arkansas between 2013-17, getting a full taste of the conference's more modern form in his time leading the Razorbacks. How did he fare? Overall, Bielema took Arkansas to an underwhelming 29-34 record, with his 11-29 conference tally ringing especially dire.

That should be more than enough for SEC folks to wave off Bielema's comments, but just for good measure, I've got another number for you.

The Final Decider in the SEC vs. Big Ten Conversation

From 2006 on (we're suiting this comparison to Bielema's own standard), an SEC team has won the national title a total of 13 times. Hopefully Will Stein can pull off a miracle and add Kentucky to that total soon but, again, that's besides the point.

The Big Ten, on the other hand, has produced just four, and three of those have come since 2023. Five SEC teams make up the former metric, while just three from the Big Ten comprise the latter.

What else is there left to say, truly? The SEC gets a bad rap for arrogance, but with double-digit national championships to stand on, every team in the conference has the right to point to their league's history. Bielema, on the other hand, seems to be blowing smoke just for the sake of it.
