Last season, Kentucky Basketball had its worst-ever SEC finish, tying Missouri and Ole Miss at a woeful 10-8 finish in conference play. And now that the 2026 SEC schedule is out, there are very few breathers that can be found on a similarly challenging slate.
In a weird scheduling twist, Kentucky starts and finishes SEC play on the road. The Cats will be visiting Oklahoma on January 2, and then wrapping up the season in Gainesville as they take on the everyone's favorite coach Todd Golden (do I have to clarify this?), and the Florida Gators on March 6.
Throughout conference competition, five matchups stand out as battles that Kentucky fans simply can't miss in Mark Pope's third season.
5. Tennessee (Jan. 23, Home)
Kentucky and Tennessee have lost no love over the years, and this matchup between the two will be the first major test of the SEC season. The Cats need to win at home early to get things off on the right foot.
Vols transfer guard Juke Harris is among the best in the country, and this may be Tennessee's most loaded roster from top-to-bottom under Rick Barnes ever. But it's still Tennessee, at the end of the day, and Kentucky will have the home crowd on their side in this pivotal January meeting.
4. Alabama (Feb. 6, Home)
Few things are worse than losing to Pat Kelsey or Todd Golden, but man, Nate Oats is right up there with them. From trash-talking during timeouts to simply dominating Kentucky as of late (Pope is 0-4 against the Crimson Tide), the Cats can not afford to keep losing to Alabama.
The two will only meet once in the regular season, too, and Kentucky needs a victry at home to restore some balance in the force. It won't be easy, but losing to Brandon Garrison in Rupp Arena would be perhaps the worst moment in all of February, at least.
3. Oklahoma (Jan. 2, Road)
Starting off 0-1 in the SEC is never what you are hoping for. Last season, the Cats started off 0-2, dropping games to Alabama and Missouri.
Let's not kick off the conference season on the wrong foot here against Oklahoma. Former Louisville Cardinal Khani Rooths is now a Sooner, and transfer guard Pop Isaacs will look to bounce back from the worst season in his college career. The Sooners will be at home and pushing for an upset; even without Oklahoma-ender Otega Oweh, the Wildcats desperately need to get this one done.
2. Texas (Jan. 30, Road)
Sean Miller is putting in some wild work on the recruiting trail. They have the No. 1 overall class, according to 247Sports, headlined by five-stars Austin Goosby and (former Kentucky target) Marcus Spears Jr.
This team will be among the scariest in the SEC and, last season, Kentucky narrowly escaped with a five-point win in Lexington against a lesser Longhorns squad. This duel with Texas will be another barometer of just how good this similarly improved Kentucky team will be come March.
1. Florida (March 6, Road)
Kentucky was just swept by Florida last season (0-3), and Denzel Aberdeen went back to the Gators after a one-year stint in Lexington. That's makes the stakes high enough, but again, this is also the last game of the regular season.
You just need to win this one. It would properly set the tone for the SEC Tournament, and March Madness is right around the corner after that end. Another really tough game, absolutely, but one Kentucky needs to find a way to win like no other.
