Mark Pope, Kentucky won't come across any easy wins with their SEC schedule this year

After landing Milan Momcilovic put the Kentucky fanbase in a good mindset heading into summer practice season, a stretch of challenging news has temporarily frustrated the Big Blue Nation this week. First and foremost, returning wing Kam Williams had to undergo surgery on his previously injured foot, meaning he'll miss crucial time for the earlier part of the year, at least.

Second, and more recent, Kentucky's full SEC schedule has officially been revealed. Now, it's not much different than it usually is, but as usual, that means the Wildcats won't catch any breaks in conference play this season. The SEC will present another unrelenting trial for Pope's third campaign.

What's more, after going just 10-8 in the SEC in 2025-26, the Cats have their backs against the wall for a much better performance this time around. From the top-down, the blue and white will have their work cut out for them on a weekly basis.

BBN, get ready for the gauntlet.

Beginning and Ending SEC Play Away From Home

Uniquely this year, Kentucky will begin and end SEC competition away from home. Things will open up unusually on the road against Oklahoma, where Porter Moser and his Sooners are facing pressure of their own after a mediocre finish last year.

Coach Pope has yet to lose to Oklahoma at Kentucky thus far, currently sitting at 3-0, but you can expect the Sooners to pull on a rowdy home crowd as Moser looks to flip his fortunes. That game will tip off on January 2.

Even without the honorary ruler of Oklahoma, in Otega Oweh, the Cats should be able to manage that one regardless. Perhaps we''ll crown a new commander of the Sooners - who knows?

Then, at the opposite end of the schedule, Kentucky will travel to face the Florida Gators in Gainesville on March 6. That matchup will tie off SEC play for the Wildcats, likely pitting them against the conference's top team when it's all said and done.

Pope's luck against the Gators is opposite to that of Oklahoma, as he holds a 1-3 tally vs. Todd Golden so far. That'll be one to circle on your schedule, Cats fans.

More Matchups to Watch for Kentucky

In the way of more matchups to watch for the Wildcats, the usual home-and-home with Tennessee remains a standout. Pope has yet to lose a regular season battle with the Vols yet (4-0), and he'll get to start the series this season on his turf, on January 23. The follow-up game will land on February 13 a little further south.

Luckily, Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas A&M will get their lone shot at Kentucky in Rupp Arena, meaning the Cats get to face Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Georgia on the road. No SEC team is an easy win, but you'd rather face the latter bunch away from home than the former.

The Crimson Tide on the road last campaign nearly sent me into hysterics. We'll take what we can get in the SEC's wasteland.

Traveling to the Lone Star State to face the much-improved Texas Longhorns feels like the biggest question mark on this schedule, as it's a tough break that could end up being one of Kentucky's best conference wins. Pope stands at 1-1 against Texas in his time with Kentucky so far.

It's all gas, no brakes in the SEC, as always. We'll have to hope this 2026-27 Cats team is more equipped to handle the given twists and turns than last year's battered crew.
