Kentucky basketball: 5 Rushed reactions vs Missouri 2.0
5. Poor line-up rotation
Kentucky was started the game practically scoring at will. But then Kevin Knox picked up a 2nd foul and SGA needed rest. Unfortunately for Calipari, he was forced to use a lineup that just couldn’t seem to score.
Calipari turned to Diallo, Green, Gabriel, Washington and Vanderbilt. This group of five has proven to be offensively challenged throughout the season. Mizzou was able to claw its way back into the game because the Cats just couldn’t seem to score. Knox had to sit because of foul trouble, there’s no disputing that. But SGA either has to stay on the floor to help the offense or Calipari needs to use a timeout to allow Gilgeous-Alexander a quick rest.
If it’s a possibility that SGA and Knox will be out at the same time, then UK needs a secondary offensive scheme. Tonight just didn’t look good with this group of five – maybe try to use Richards or SKJ on the block. Possibly use the low-stack play with PJ and Diallo. Calipari could even try his traditional dribble-drive motion offense with that group of five on the floor. Kentucky’s offense is just simply more challenged when Knox or Shai are on the bench. Hopefully BBN never has to see this situation again, but if it happens then I hope Calipari will be prepared for it.
