Kentucky Wildcats: Backcourt

With John Calipari in charge, the Kentucky Wildcats have never been short of talent. The most entertaining positions to typically watch is the combination of point guard and shooting guard.

Who could ever forget the alley oops from Bledsoe to Wall, or the smooth crossover of Teague leading to an assist to the smooth stroke of Lamb from behind the arc. Next seasons backcourt will not have the size of this past years, but where will their talent size up?

Currently on the roster for next season is returning point guard Tyler Ulis. His size could be underwhelming, but that does not take away from his talents on the court. Last season Ulis had to share his minutes with Andrew Harrison, which limited his number of assists, but his poise is what really stood out.

On the road in a hostile YUM Center this past season, it was Tyler Ulis who stepped up to help carry the Kentucky Wildcats to victory with 14 points and 2 assists. Coming back for a sophomore year, Ulis will have the keys to the backcourt from captain Calipari.

"Calipari said he texted Ulis on Sunday to say: “I’m going to build a team. Get your guys and let’s do this again. Let’s rerun this.”"

Teaming up with Ulis will be the nation’s number one high school point guard Isaiah Briscoe. Having two point guards in a starting line up seems uncharacteristic, but we saw how successful it can be in 2009. Briscoe brings to the table just like Ulis a firery passion that is hard to be matched.

Isaiah, at 6’3 knows how to use his body to get to the basket and score, he proved it when he took over the Jordan Brand Classic in the second half. The two together surely will help the dribble drive to thrive.

The addition of Mychal Mulder could be the most crucial of them all. Last season it was evident how efficient the Kentucky Wildcats can be when they have a three point shooter to stretch the floor. Mulder is just that guy.

The 6’4 shooting guard filled it up from deep last season while shooting a very high 46.3 percent from deep averaging 15.7 points per game. With two point guards looking to dish the ball, Mulder will be ready to catch and shoot at all times.

This backcourt would suffice just nice for next season. However the addition of Jamal Murray would take it to new heights… stay tuned this month to see if he ends up with the Kentucky Wildcats.
