As the Kentucky Wildcats left their post game huddle, I realized how important this win is for the Cats. Kentucky improved to 20-16, and 6-9 in SEC play with a 5-0 victory over rival Tennessee. One weird stat of the night, the Bat Cats only scored in odd numbered innings (1,5,7).
Zack Brown threw a gem for Kentucky tonight. Brown went 7.1 innings allowing only five hits while striking out four. The only down side to Brown’s performance was the four walks he allowed. As Brown was flirting with a pitch count over 110, the lefty Logan Salow was warming up in the bullpen.
Brown was pulled at exactly 110 pitches, were Salow would try and complete the shutout. Brown came in and did his job, as he struck out all three batters to end the game in the top of the ninth. Kentucky pitching ended up with seven strikeouts in the night.
The Volunteers only used two pitchers as well, with starter Andy Cox going seven innings giving up five runs on eight hits. Cox also walked two and struck out six Wildcats.
Jacob Westphal was the man to finish the job for the Vols, as he threw the eighth inning. Westphal got through the eighth with no more added damage, walking two and giving up one hit.
The Bat Cats flipped a switch on offense tonight. The cats scored five runs with three players picking up RBIs tonight. Barrett, Shelby, and White were the three players to tally up an RBI tonight. White used a double and single to push across two runs for the Cats. Shelby used his early single to put the Cats on top in the first inning. All three runs were scored by lead off man Kyle Barrett.
I might have seen the weirdest play I have ever seen in baseball tonight. In the bottom of the eighth with Dorian Hairston hitting, Hairston checked his swing and doubled down the right field line. JaVon Shelby was on first and advanced to third on the play. I believe every person inside of Cliff Hagan Stadium was surprised to see the weirdest base hit in maybe Kentucky history.
Kentucky continues the series against Tennessee tomorrow at 6:30 PM. Kentucky Baseball is running a promotion tomorrow for all you “Cliff’s” out there, so if your name is Cliff you get in for free! Wether you gt in for free or not, come support the Bat Cats as they look to take the series tomorrow.
