Karl-Anthony Towns is named SEC Player of the Week

facebooktwitterreddit

There is no argument that the Kentucky Wildcats frontcourt is as deep and as talented as they come.  Willie Cauley-Stein is in the midst of seemingly every major award that there is, yet Karl-Anthony Towns has accomplished something that Willie Cauley-Stein has not: won the SEC Player of the Week Award.  The UK freshmen have shared the Freshman of the Week Award virtually all season long, yet this is the first time a Kentucky Wildcat has earned the Player of the Week Award. That may seem odd in a conference in which your regular season champion went 16-0, but it just speaks volumes about how unselfish this team really is.  Here is more from a UKAA press release.

  • LEXINGTON, Ky. – Karl-Anthony Towns was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday after a week where he led top-ranked Kentucky to two wins, which propelled the Wildcats to completing the regular season 31-0.

The freshman is the first Wildcat to earn SEC Player of the Week this season.

Towns earned SEC Freshman of the Week three times this season. Top-ranked Kentucky hauled in 11 SEC Freshman of the Week accolades from a possible 17 weeks this season.

Devin Booker won the award a league-high five times – including four straight from Jan. 12 to Feb. 2. Trey Lyles won it twice, while teammate Tyler Ulis garnered the award once.

Towns began the week by going for a career-high-tying 19 points, adding seven rebounds in a comeback victory at Georgia. He helped UK close the game out as 17 of his 19 points came in the second half.

in the win over Florida, he did a little bit of everything for the Wildcats. He was a force on the defensive end with six blocks, the second most on the season for the first-year player.

He also had 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Furthermore, he led UK with three assists.

For the week, Towns averaged 16 points, 8 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 2 assists.
