Not to look a gift horse in the mouth but looking ahead to the 2014 class, it could possibly resemble the star power found in this 2013 class. Rivals just released their 2014 Rankings and gasp, UK is pursuing 8 of the top 10, along with 12, 23, 30, 33, and 71. Who knows how this shakes out, but there’s a great chance we will still have the #1 class, as usual, but it might not be “historic” like this 2013 class.
"Chicago big man Jahlil Okafor held on to the No. 1 spot in the Rivals.com player rankings for the Class of 2014, which were released Wednesday. Okafor, who will be in Lexington for the UK Alumni Game on Monday, has narrowed his list of schools to UK, Duke, Kansas, Arizona, Baylor, Ohio State, Michigan State and Illinois. He is also ranked No. 1 overall by Scout.com and ESPN. The next seven prospects on the Rivals list are all UK targets. Stanley Johnson moved up five spots to take the No. 3 spot. The small forward from California will use an official visit to attend Big Blue Madness on Oct. 18. UK and Arizona are considered the favorites in his recruitment. Chicago big man Cliff Alexander is No. 4, followed by Jones at No. 5, Texas center Myles Turner at No. 6, Minnesota shooting guard Rashad Vaughn at No. 7, Indianapolis power forward Trey Lyles at No. 8 and Texas forward Justise Winslow at No. 9. Karl Towns — UK’s only commitment for 2014 — is No. 11 overall in the Rivals rankings. Other UK targets on the list include Kelly Oubre (12th), James Blackmon Jr. (23rd), Devin Booker (30th), Tyler Ulis (33rd) and Dominic Magee (71st). Booker and Ulis will also use official visits to see UK’s Alumni Game on Monday. Lyles, Blackmon and Oubre have confirmed official visits for Big Blue Madness."
Senior Line Backer, Avery Williamson, was nominated for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award yesterday according to official UK Athletics site.
"LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky football senior linebacker Avery Williamson has been named one of 30 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision student-athletes to the 2013 Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition – it was announced Wednesday afternoon. Williamson has earned countless awards in the past few seasons, including All-SEC by Phil Steele’s College Football and CollegeSportsMadness.com last season. So far this season, Williamson is on several watch lists, including 2013 College Football Performance Awards Defense Award Watch List and the Butkus Award Watch List, which honors the nation’s best linebacker. Williamson is also a nominee for the Lott IMPACT Trophy. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Off the field, Williamson has been very involved in community service projects during his three seasons at Kentucky. He traveled to Ethiopia in May of 2013 for a week-long community service trip where he interacted with residents of impoverished communities, visited imprisoned men, helped widows, cared for orphans, and helped renovate houses. He also has participated in “Read Across America” by reading books to children at a local mall, served as a celebrity guest for UK’s largest student-run philanthropy, Dance Blue, which raised more than $1.1 million this year, volunteered for Big Blue U, helped UK freshmen move in their dorms, volunteered to pack and deliver food for God’s Pantry BackPack Program, while also staying to interact with the children at the school, volunteered at Kenneth Kennedy’s “Be a Match” Bone Marrow Donor Drive and was volunteer bellringer for the Salvation Army. He also frequently volunteers to speak at local elementary schools and summer camps. Of the 30 candidates, 12 have grade point averages of 3.0 or higher, seven are All-Americans and 12 were all-conference selections in 2012. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition."
